Is promotion this season possible? 11:18 - Jul 7 with 1480 views | saint901 | Accepting that the transfer window has a way to go, what do we think. For me, it's very much "unlikely". I'd be delighted with a play off place, content with mid table and happy to avoid relegation. I think the squad remains lacking in certain areas, the management raw and untested at this level and the owners still trying to make this a business and not a football club.

Is promotion this season possible? on 13:04 - Jul 7 with 1271 views | 1885_SFC | Just by the fact we are Southampton Football Club, we will sell Dibbling, Fernandes & Ramsdale at the 11th hour of the transfer window when Premier League clubs panic wildly that they're short on players & we will sell. Just when you thought there was a slim chance of keeping them & making a good go of life in the Championship - money talks. We will sign a promising teenage nipper (or two) from Chelsea or Man City just minutes before the window closes... and any hope of automatic promotion will fly out the window. I feel sorry already for Will Still. Tis the Southampton way... especially under Sport Republic.

Is promotion this season possible? on 13:27 - Jul 7 with 1228 views | saint901 | I listened to a podcast recently which featured an interview with an owner. he said that the transfer window saw early action from players who were happy where they were - didn't listen to agents - and just wanted stability. There was then a pause as "average" players had their egos stroked with promises of moves to big money. As the window counted down, reality bites and many average players become "available". Star players are different but we're not going to attract any.
Is promotion this season possible? on 14:13 - Jul 7 with 1159 views | DorsetIan | There's no point trying to get out of the league unless we do it with a squad that can at least form the basis of a team that can compete in the PL. I don't want another PL season like last year. Ever.

Based on how rubbish/penniless the other teams (baring our fellow relegatees) are? [Post edited 7 Jul 14:26]

Is promotion this season possible? on 14:45 - Jul 7 with 1098 views | Ifonly | Of course promotion is possible. We have a decent chance because, on average, football these days is all about money. Where you finish in the league is strongly correlated with your wage bill i.e. on average you get what you pay for. Look at the PL last year, there were some clubs who over-achieved their budget (Brentford, Forest, Bournemouth) and some who under-achieved (Man Utd, Spurs, Leicester), but by and large clubs finished about where their budget said they should. If you look at it on average over many seasons, the link between budget and results becomes even stronger. We were 18th based on budget i.e. we should have been in a relegation scrap instead of being fecking useless, but we were always likely to be relegated. This year we will have one of the biggest budgets. If we don't get a play-off place we will have failed. That's always possible the way SR do business, but they really have to feck up monumentally for us not to have a chance of promotion. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The thing is from the club's perspective going up and having another season like last season is better financially than staying in the championship so they'd actually prefer it. Also we only have two seasons of parachute payments left, after that we'll have to cut our cloth accordingly, and that then makes going up a significantly harder ask. So i wouldn't be surprised at all to see SR getting in loans that get us up, with no real future planning beyond that.

Very true, and maybe it's now actually impossible without breaching the FFP rules to compete with a new team in the PL. And I guess it highlights the difference between the financial motivations of the Club as a business, and as a football Club. But last season was purgatory and I felt resentful watching them, particularly since January when the Club didn't even attempt to strengthen to stay in the league. If the Club are just going to use a PL season to get some cash, and not be too fussed about results, there's not really much point in going to watch.

Is promotion this season possible? on 17:34 - Jul 7 with 850 views | 1ASIN12 | We have gone down with a worse side than last time, we have also got a worse squad than the one that finished 4th We do not have Stuart Armstrong, Walker Peters, Che Adam’s or David Brooks. Fernandez is a good player and if no one comes in for him then that is a big bonus. Of course promotion is possible, and it is for the other 23 teams too. A lot will depend on who we have left come September obviously but there are a lot of teams will want to be top 6 . Birmingham look to me to be a bit like Ipswich so can see them challenging for the top 2, along with Ipswich themselves , Sheffield Utd and Leicester. Then a whole host of teams who will be looking for a playoff place, Coventry , Middlesbrough, West Brom, Norwich and even media darlings Wrexham. [Post edited 7 Jul 18:29]

We have Fernandes, Ramsdale, Harwood Bellis and Dibling who will either stay or we'll get good money for. If they stay we have a great squad for this level. If any of them leave we have good money for replacements and it's down to the recruitment guys to make sure we get in decent players for the managers style. We are in a strong position and should be in the mix come the end of the season or something will have gone radically wrong - always a possibility where SR are concerned.
