I can see a 3 year deal making sense. For a 31 year old player there is a trade off between the length of contract and his wages. If we'd offered a 1 year contract we'd have had to pay higher wages. JS would accept a bigger wage cut if he gets a longer deal because that offers him security.

Hopefully what happens now is we're promoted next summer and sell JS to another championship club. The lower wages should then mean that there will be potential buyers who can afford him and with 2 years on his contract we get a few quid too. He isn't good enough for the PL but he'll be able to play in the championship for another 3 years.

So I can see how a 3 year contract on championship wages could make sense. Whether or not SR have played it like this, who knows. I don't have much confidence in them.

As to whether it makes sense to keep him at all, I think it does. We get a decent championship level CB for zero transfer fee. I hope we have better ones who keep him out of the side, but we need back-up players too and he's good enough for that.

If you were Jack Stephens, why would you sign for another Championship club in 12 months' time?

I think it's utterly bonkers.

We should have given him 2 years tops.

Should have given him feck all.The idiot gets himself sent off twice for worse than schoolboy behaviour, and is out of position most of the time, with at least two mistakes guaranteed every game.

And then you hear that Adam Armstrong is likely to be pushed out, a player who always gives 100%, doesn't pull stupid stunts and gets sent off, and scores goals in the championship.

Sorry, these clowns really do belong in a circus.

Not going to elaborate much on this decision, other than to say it smacks of desperation.

He really has struck gold getting a 3 year deal.

He'd sign because that can be a better deal for him. He and the club (should) know that if we're back in the PL he won't be playing. That means he'll get zero bonuses which typically make up about 20% of total compensation (I'm told). If he signs for another championship club he should be on similar wages but he'll also be picking up bonuses and a signing on fee. Plus he'll have the professional satisfaction of playing and the possibility of extending his career. If he signs for a championship club who get promotion, he could get a very decent bonus.

The important thing here is really the wages, not the length of contract. So long as we've only given him championship wages there's no issue either way. In the worst case if we spend the next 3 years in the championship we'd probably want to keep him.

But we've got Spors now, who apparently knows what he is doing.

He was reportedly on north of £50k a week when we were in the Prem.

Pleased for Stephens , this is good news.
Much maligned for some reason whilst so many other mediocre players ...20m THB , 18m Downes get a free pass.

He cost 500k and for me he's a modern day version of Frannie without the tache.
Limited in certain ways but as with Frannie we are a better team when he plays.

this is honestly laughable
a clear example SR are clueless, read the fkn room, he gets muted applause or booed by the crowd when he is announced, his performances have led to endless defeats
this really beggars belief

When Jack plays centre-half, he usually has a pretty good game and yes prone to the odd error which centre half isn't? But anywhere else he's clearly out of his depth. Martin played him out of his depth - what a manager!

Jack's been a good captain and representative (with a couple of stupid errors). In the Championship Jack's still a good captain and centre-half back up but three years is SR stupidity yet again.

Jack as a footballer , for an 'ambitious team' seriously committed to forming a squad capable of holding its own in the Prem, really doesn't fit the bill. We have enough capable centre halves.

Overall, I agree with Pat and say two years tops is reasonable. But there again I guess he'll be doing a Lallana for that third year.

Poll: SR Out - Yes, No or Not sure

I would say that Jack is a proper Saint and a great lad. I've met him a few times, top lad. He's not the best player in the world, but he will do a job in the championship I would say.

As for SR, this is the extent of their ambition. Get used to it.

If he was available on a free transfer from another club, we wouldn’t go near him.

Ludicrous decision by the club.
