I used to work with a bloke who played off 2, he entered the qualifiers every year as, in his words, for a small fee you get to play on some top courses that you either couldn’t normally afford or if you could, be allowed to play on!! I don’t watch it as I haven’t got Sky but still follow it.

Though 2 is an impressive handicap to mortals... It's likely about 7 shots off qualifying standard! But yes, that's exactly the point. It's a fascinating field for this very reason.

The only time I ever got to ‘play for QPR’ ! Club v Fans matchplay game at a club in Middlesex. A player (Steve Palmer, I think) didn’t turn up, so I was chosen to switch to play for the ‘Club’ with the kitman. His name I forget. But Birch & his ‘scratch’ brother, Cook, Rowlands, Ramage all played and Steve Gallen was in the group in front of us, I recall. Anyway, we halved our match, despite being ‘dormie 1 up’ on the 18th tee. Our 1/2 point was enough to secure a 7&1/2 to 5&1/2 victory, so I felt briefly popular. Anyway, as claim to fames go…..
