England ladies 07:26 - Jul 18 with 1206 views | Berber | Last night sums it up really, some parts were like a dog chasing a balloon, others where it seems they were obliged to give the ball to the opponents under some weird unwritten rule. The penalty shootout was classic England though, even if hugely unprofessional. It is a bit like watching Dr Pimple Popper, you can’t not can you.

England ladies on 08:19 - Jul 18 with 1129 views | City_boy | That penalty shoot out (by both teams) was farcical and comical. I am guessing England practiced penalties given this was the knock out stage. Imagine how much worse it could have been had they not practiced. After getting through, they will probably all be asking for equality with mens game. I missed the game (thankfully) as I was at Essex v Hants T20, which was far more exciting.
England ladies on 08:27 - Jul 18 with 1102 views | PatfromPoole | I watched it. Low on quality, and England were by far the weaker side, but blimey they really showed some of the old-fashioned characteristics of togetherness, character and spirit. Was a bit of a throwback in some ways. Should have been out of the game by half-time. Sweden will forever wonder how the hell they lost.

England ladies on 09:16 - Jul 18 with 1000 views | Ifonly | I didn't watch, but I've seen other matches in the group stage which have also been low on quality. There's no doubt, a lot of the football is rubbish in comparison to the men's. But those who say "nobody's interested" are just wrong. For example, the other night the England v Wales match had an average audience of 2.9 million, which was nearly 3 times as much as the club world cup final (1.1 million) which was on at the same time on an equivalent free to air channel.

I watched the last 10 minutes of regular time, the extra time and the pens. The quality was dreadful, both sides constantly giving the ball away and panicking like fvck when defending. Then the penalties, I mean wow, beyond horrific. However, if you take the actual quality of play out of it, it was quite endearing to see the rawness and positive side of top level football. They just crack on when fouled, accept the refs decisions (and there were some proper dodgy calls) and work their fvcking tits off for their teammates. In some ways it reminded me of watching a kids match before the cynical side of the game takes hold of them.

Was there much alternative to watch though? I watched the ET and was a bit surprised at some of the quality, but also not so surprised and some of the sh1t quality And as for the penalties, well that really was cringeworthy/comical stuff. I'd also guess both keepers were off their line for some And how England survived from what I saw was probably down to the crap quality to a degree. But did like some of the beefy tackles going in and some of those Swedes were quite viewatble

I would imagine BBC got very good viewing figures for last night's game, and they will go through the roof for the semi-final v Italy on Tuesday night.

The point is that there was a direct choice between a big money, hard fought, top quality men's world final, versus a group game in the women's euros. Three times as many people chose the women's game than those who chose the men's.
England ladies on 11:46 - Jul 18 with 800 views | saint901 | The England team went back to how they played in the first game and frankly should have been buried by half time. Aside from passes between the defenders (leading to Sweden's first goal) all the other passes out of the back were of the Hollywood variety and likely to end up with a defender. I don't understand how Bronze stays in this team as I'm guessing more than half her passes don't reach a team mate. Sweden got a couple and then I think went to sleep thinking the game was over. That was naive and they paid the price. The England defence was poor. Carter played left back, left CB and then right CB and was exposed in all of them. I think she will not start the next match. James is a class act. The penalties were farcical - not jut ours but Sweden as well. Who sends an 18 year old to take the crucial penalty (she missed) when the average age of that team is over 29? Poor management.

It may well have been an exciting cricket match. But Hampshire LOST. I would take a poor England game (exciting in spells) that we WIN every day of the week.

Tbh, I 'd almost go as far as to say the WCF was not really wanted by Joe Public initially hence the apparent lack of interest throughout the tournament inc the final. Ok, there is a tendency to knock women's football generally (guilty m'lord) but suddenly a success story for the girls again so more watching it. I'd guess if England get to the final a much bigger audience no doubt

England ladies on 11:29 - Jul 19 with 158 views | Jellybaby | Oh no, I watched the penalty shootout on youtube after hearing it was "comedy gold" and now I have added to the positive womens football algorithm, so becoming part of the justification to promote it even more. The commentator said it was "unbearable" at one point - well she was right about that! How do you make ladies football penalty shoot outs "bearable"? The only solutions I could come up with was moving the penalty spot closer and the other involved stilettos!

I think the option moving the spot closer would help. It would help those players that pumped the ball into Row Z. (row A at West Ham) and there was one kick that was on target but I wasn't sure it had enough power to get over goal line. [Post edited 19 Jul 14:20]
