Grimsby friendly 16:25 - Jul 18 with 4665 views | 442Dale | Lot of heavy rain forecast from tomorrow morning and although there hasn’t been much rain recently, wonder if the club are going to employ the covers for a few hours to protect the newly laid surface?

How weird... Did i imagine it? Turns out there's a Family Fun Day at the Town Hall tomorrow, but could've sworn i saw something advertised on the OS as an event taking place at the ground, which we've had before

Yes both are happening. The Town Hall is running family fund activities every day during the school holidays. Dale are running a family fun event on the 5 aside pitch. Savvy parents might get their kids to both.
Grimsby friendly on 17:34 - Jul 19 with 3384 views | Dalenet | Enjoyable watch. Two completely different teams after about 55 minutes. Whatmuff was decent in goal and made a good save, although Grimsby didn't trouble us too much. The trialist keeper looked very very young...but made a save and got an assist for Rodney's goal. Overall we played some nice football and once the players gel they will step up the pace.

Both keepers did ok but they're obviously not ready for the first team. Whatmuff was neat and tidy but i thought his kicking was poor. It's to be expected, they're still learning their trade. We're not here to blood youngsters for the benefit of their parent clubs, we need a keeper who is fit for purpose and experienced in men's football. It's the most important position on the pitch and it cost us big time last season in the important games. [Post edited 19 Jul 19:15]

Grimsby friendly on 19:51 - Jul 19 with 2665 views | Daley_Lama | Views on the newbies. First half. Very even between the two teams, Grimsby started the stronger but Dale grew as half went on. New keeper in net, aside from a mis-placed clearance did all the goalkeeper tick boxes well. Fast off his line to smother the ball. Came for corners. Saved a 1v1 (offside flag went up) Good with feet (right footed) Pritchard at LWB. Solid as, defensively. Corner and free-kick duties. Not on first view a flying Taryn type WB. Trialist A RAM. Notably good at finding space between lines and defenders. Keeper spotted this as half wore on and played through to him. Offensively no major points to mention Mani at CF. Scored a good header from Tobi cross. Wrestled with defenders a few times. Held ball up well, tracked back defensively a couple of times when needed. Second Half Hendo on after 45, everybody else swapped at 60. Grimbsy made 3 subs after 60 then a couple later on. In the first 15 minutes of this half Grimsby on top, lots of last ditch blocks and bodies on the line moments. Traillist B Keeper. Saved a point blank shot direct at him. Good distribution, non better than his assist - great kick to Rodney who firstly out positioned the defender, then secondly out-muscled him to get clear and score across their keeper. Triallist C (28) LCH. Nothing of note to mention which, in this position is a good thing. Did defensive duties well. Was up against a lesser threat after Grimsby subs so hard to rate. Triallist D (29) RWB. Very attack minded. Driving in on his left foot, beating men a couple of times. Looked hungry for the ball. Linked up well with…. Humble RAM. Actually started in CM when first came on but quickly swapped with Corey Edwards to this poisition. Good touch and good passing on first view. Moss LCB: Same as Triallist C - hard to rate as Dale were on top following the subs so no major Grimsby threat. Petit CM. Played mostly a defensive role giving Edwards a more forward CM role. Solid 30 mins nothing of major note jumping out. The game itself was competitive with a few tasty tackles going in here and there. No major shift in formation or approach to games. Edwards had a Cole Palmer moment in the second half where he found himself in space, sent an approaching defender completely, shifted to the edge of the box and calmly slotted….ok, the last bit didn’t happen, he went for power and the ball went high, wide and not very handsome. Rodney and Taryn linked well on the left, keeping these two fit for the whole season would be a major plus for the team.

Grimsby friendly on 00:06 - Jul 20 with 2033 views | mikehunt | I rated Whatmuff and it wouldn't worry me unduly if he played in the first team when the season starts. He didn't seem fazed by anything and made some impressive interventions during the match: the point-blank save being a prime example(even though the offside flag ultimately went up). He also made a very swift and brave slide to take the ball off an attacker's foot as he was about to shoot. But he made a quite marvelous save during the spell where Grimsby were knocking on the door, when, as our defence were a bit at sixes and sevens, a shot came in which he blocked and, as he was falling backwards he managed to flick his hand at the ball and just deflect the ball away from the onrushing attacker. A really impressive save. Those moments, coupled with him confidently coming for and catching balls in a crowded box, I thought he showed great promise. He did not look his age either. T'other lad was not so bad either if somewhat shorter than Whatmuff. Our first goal was a peach: Tobi with a beautiful cross that Mani confidently headed home. Lots more of those please. And great to see Dev off the mark already. We played well overall but still managed to tie ourselves in knots with this passing around in our box lark. I thought that was being phased out? Still, if we can defend like that for the rest of the season, we should be ok.

Agree with your last point, it was reminiscent at times of what we saw last season. We had great possession on the edge of the area with players waiting in the middle, Mani in particular, but the players mindset was to instead turn backwards and recycle the ball back to the central defenders or even the goalkeeper on a couple of occasions. Mani will rely on good service, get the ball into him at every opportunity, dont pass up thr chance in order to recycle the ball, its the opposite of what he needs, whip the ball into the box. We did it once and he scored. Tobi completely unmarked out wide screaming for the ball but Gordon decides instead to turn inside and pass it five ysrds to the central defender and they play keep ball, why? Opportunities to shoot or put in a dangerous cross turned down in favour of posession. The Grimsby defence let off the hook and they all move further up the pitch. Yes we keep possession but the whole point of possession in the final third is to create chances, not recycle the ball backwards to the halfway line. It frustrates the crowd and it must frustrate the forwards. The tempo was missing from our play at times also, defenders again taking too many passes between each other for no reason. Apart from that there was also some good passages of play and Mani will be a real hanful, Pritchard is also very solid. I could be wrong but i seem to remember Pritchard playing up front for Accrington and he was a real handful, maybe McNulty could look at that. From what I saw yesterday our style of play isn't going to change and we still need another forward and goalkeeper. The trialist we've had ( apparently ex Barnsley) doesn't look up to it. The best teams last season moved the ball quickly and they scored a lot of goals. That will be the same this coming season and that's the blueprint needed to get us out of this league. Yesterday was just a friendly but it was nowhere near the level the team needs to be week in week out, I'm assuming McNulty, Taylor, Done will know that. It was only a friendly though so has to be put into context. Last seasons results against the poorest teams in this league weren't good enough, the same against the top six teams. McNulty needs to instill pace, passion and desire into performances, thats just as important as possession stats and it was missing last season. We were far too nice as a team. Moss looks a very good signing, we've brought a lot of good players into the club this summer. You nearly run me over driving off the car park yesterday, 5mph road rage 🤣🤣 [Post edited 20 Jul 9:04]

Yes because Rodney rarely plays the central striker in the front three. Would think Barlow, Rodney and Dieseruvwe would start the season. Would like to see Rodney and Dieseruvwe in a two with a midfield three too. Either way, yes they’ll play together. It won’t ever be one or the other.
