Paul Lambert Eyes Promotion Push
Paul Lambert Eyes Promotion Push

Ever-cautious Paul Lambert has hinted that he has plans in place to press for promotion.

Feet still planted firmly on the ground, Lambert insists that Norwich secure their Championship status first and foremost.

With the figure of 50 league points considered to be that "safety net", Norwich currently sit in sixth place with 33 points, 17 short of the magic figure.

Six more wins out of our remaining 45 games is almost a certainty. Although nothing is certain in football.

Once we pass that benchmark, and if we are still in the mix for a top 6 finish, "punching above our weight", as Lambert calls it, then: "we have to go for it".

Securing the signature of Leon Barnett is the first step in that push. Although the fee remains "undisclosed", Lambert says it was "a steal".

The Yellow and Green Army have been subjected to some pretty less than average loan players in the not-too-distant past, with committment to the cause being the first question.

Not so with Leon Barnett. From his very first appearance talk focussed on extending his loan, and talk of a permanent move remained mere speculation, owing to the public knowledge of the club's financial status.

It was good to read on the Football Rumours web site that West Brom manager, Roberto Di Matteo, was looking to offload Barnett, although nerves jangled as the thought of the defender going to another club set in.

It was great news to read just a couple of days later that Norwich had signed him.

Barnett is one of four players that Lambert has told the board that he needs to help the present squad take the step up that will be needed to improve the club's status in the football pyramid.

Speaking to reporters recently, Lambert said:"I told the board the players that I want in, so they know who I want,” he said.

“They know I need players in. First and foremost we have to get to that magic figure to keep us in the league and then do that and if we are still hovering about, we have to go for it.

“But first and foremost I have always said is to get safe, and if we’re safe and we’re hovering about up there then we have to go for it and to go for it I need players in here to give that group a hand.

“People shouldn’t think we have loads of money all over the place, because there’s not.

“But hopefully we get a hand – and I am sure we will.

“If we are round about and I know we can be safe and we are doing okay but we are still up near where we are, we have to try and do everything we can.

“The spirit they (the players) have got is great and the three lads I want to come in would be huge for us, huge. But I need them in, I need players in.

“We have to keep improving the squad, driving on – you never stand still, that’s for sure.”

The supporters are hopeful, the players seem determined, now Paul Lambert has laid his cards out for all to see.

There are some tough games coming up over the next six weeks, but by February our status as Championship survivors could be taken as read.
