The View From The Other Side - Scunthorpe Vs U's

Neil Wright, Chairman of the Scunthorpe United London and South East Supporters' Club, answers our questions.

How long have you supported Scunthorpe?

My earliest memories of supporting the Mighty Iron are back to the 1969-70 season, as a mere 8 year old.

What are your memorable moments and games between the U’s and Scunthorpe?

Games between the 2 teams do not unfortunately bring back too many memories, though one of the few is one of the last games we played against you at Layer Road when Chris Iwelumo scored a dodgy header towards the end of 90 minutes. I seem to recall he bundled a few defenders out of the way as he rose to get to the ball. The referee and officials had all left their glasses at home that day.

What are your expectations this season?

Expectations, as always, are for survival. Having had one of the worst starts to the season in recent years, 5th from bottom will be a relief for many Iron fans I am sure. We began the season having lost 4 on the bounce but thankfully that rot has been stopped. We threw away a 1 goal lead to draw with 9 man Sheffield United at home and then went to Shrewsbury and came away with all three points last Saturday.

How has your team changed since we last played each other?

Quite drastically. We shipped out half the squad in the summer and what’s left (with the additions) is taking its time to gel together.

Who is your danger man?

Leon Clarke, on a 3 month loan from Charlton. Since his arrival he has scored 3 in 3. He seems hungry for the ball and certainly looks quality. Season long loan me hopes.

What do you know about our team?

As I live in Essex I am well aware of the exploits of your club. I know you signed Freddie Sears from West Ham in the summer, a player we had a couple of seasons ago on loan too. Probably most recently you hammered Norwich 7-1 was it when Lambert was in charge and did they not then recruit Lambert as their manager a short time later.

What’s your prediction for the game?

We'll probably scrape a 2-1 win with Clarke scoring both.
