Swans Lose Out To Former Midfielder

Doncaster 3 Swansea 1

Nationwide Report

Doncaster Rovers climbed to the top of the Nationwide Division Three table with a 3-1 home win against Swansea City, while ten-man Northampton Town lost 2-1 to Cambridge United.

Rovers took just 11 minutes to go in front at Belle Vue, with Michael McIndoe converting from the penalty spot after Izzy Iriekpen had handled a JJ Melligan cross.

Nine minutes later Doncaster doubled their lead with Melligan again involved, providing the cross for Paul Green to fire home from close range.

Andy Robinson pulled one back for the Swans 16 minutes from time, but Rovers' Gregg Blundell struck in stoppage time to clinch all three points.

It might of been an icy night but the game certainly warmed the 6,566 crowd who saw an excellent match between Doncaster Rovers and Swansea City with the home side going top of the table after their 3-1 win over the Swans. Indeed Swansea could have been in front in the first minute when an inspired Andy Warrington pushed Andy Robinson's 25-yard drive round the post. But it was Rovers who took the lead when Izzy Iriekpen was adjudged to have handled a JJ Melligan cross and Michael McIndoe slotted home from the penalty spot after 11 minutes. It certainly inspired Rovers who went two up on 20 minutes when a McIndoe pass turned Swansea's defence and Paul Green hit home a super goal. Swansea were frustrated as they watched man-of-the-match Warrington make three world class saves from Robinson twice and James Thomas. And then a Kevin Nugent lob finally beat him only for David Morley to head off the goalline. After the break, Doncaster's players dropped deep and allowed City to take control and it was no more than they deserved when Robinson hit the ball high into the Rovers net from 20 yards out in the 74th minute. Rovers had the last word when substitute Peter Hynes put Gregg Blundell clear and he slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to give Rovers a 3-1 victory they fully deserved. It was a good game and a great early Christmas present for Rovers' fans who braved a freezing night to cheer their team to a fourth win on the trot, which takes them to the top of the table whilst the Swansea team will travel home disappointed not to have taken something from the game.
