NEWS: Pompey relishing their community chance as season ticket sales top 10,000

Pompey smashed through the 10,000 season-ticket holder barrier for the first time since the club was in the Premier League in 2009 - not bad for a club which now finds itself in the League 2.

However, since the club was bought in April by a community bid led by the Pompey Supporters' Trust, it has shown its claim to be the biggest fan-owned club in the country was no idle boast.

With still three weeks to go before the new campaign kicks off, the club hopes it will add at least another thousand fans to that impressive fan roster.

Fan engagement manager at Fratton Park Micah Hall said: 'Our early-bird discount period may have just finished, but we are confident we can attract still more season ticket holders.

'Since taking over the club we have been working hard to improve the match-day experience for fans and reconnect them with the club.

'Many had become disillusioned by the Premier League years and the financial meltdown that indirectly created. These season ticket sales show that Portsmouth remains one of the biggest clubs outside the top flight - now the club is owned by the fans the days of fans being taken for granted are over.'

To demonstrate this Hall revealed a significant proportion of sales were to new buyers or those who had lapsed in recent years.

'Around 30% of the purchasers have not been season ticket holders in the past three years and by the start of the season we estimate 95% of fans will have renewed from last season.

'We are targeting an average attendance of around 13,500, which looks achievable, but if we do well we could improve on that.'

Pompey fans will get their first taste of the new Fratton Park on Saturday July 20, when Championship side Charlton arrive for a friendly (3pm).

'We are experimenting with a pay-what-you-like ticket price and on the same day we are holding a Fans' Day, organised by the fans themselves, which will see our new away kit launched as well as a host of other attractions,' he added.
