Wigan v Blackpool Preview
Thursday, 21st Aug 2014 20:26 by Editor

There are so many reasons why Blackpool are desperate to break this run of defeats. The manager needs to have something to build on, the players need a result for confidence and the club need a point or three to get off the bottom of the league. The longer the run goes on the more worrying it becomes and after two bites of the cherry at home, they'll have to rely on getting a result at the DW Stadium to stop the rot.

It really couldn't have been any worse for Jose Riga. Everyone hoped that we'd left all of last season's baggage behind us but sadly that awful run of results from the turn of the year has continued in to the new season. It's hard to believe that we've only won 3 games all year and the longer this run goes on the more difficult it will be for players and fans to believe the season isn't over before it's begun. Many said after the pre-season troubles that if we could pick up anything from August it would be a bonus but so far we've failed to gain even a draw. So will our luck change (as it has in the past) at Wigan on Saturday.

Riga's first two away trips were journeys in to the unknown. He didn't know what to expect of the players, he didn't have enough of them to fill the bench and his squad barely knew each other's names, let alone the way they played. Two weeks on and it's still hardly ideal but at least they have four games under their belt and a few training sessions to work on. You could tell from the last two games that the Blackpool manager wants to get the ball down and play it on the ground but all too often there has been a panic about our style of football with too many long balls to the front men and not enough going through midfield and out wide. If we cut out the mistakes at the back, keep possession longer than we have and test the opposition goalkeeper a bit more then our fortunes could change.

Wigan have also struggled this season with just a point on the board and they'll be looking at this game to kick start their season. Blackpool have been party poppers before at the DW and Jose Riga will hope he can continue to put a dampener on things in Wigan on Saturday.
