Time To Prove The Doubters Wrong
Thursday, 21st Aug 2014 21:47

Saints take on West Bromwich Albion in possibly their biggest home game in the Premier League since they took on Manchester United in for the final game of 2004/05 season.

After a summer of turmoil Saints take on West Bromwich Albion at St Mary's with a lot more resting on it than just 3 points, with a much changed squad and many Saints supporters having spent the summer predicting total meltdown, Ronald Koeman and his team now have to show the supporters on their home turf that they can carry on where they left off last season.

Last week at Liverpool they took a big step in that direction, Ok there wasnt three points or even a point in the bag after the game, but in many respects it was the manner of defeat that mattered more than the number of points gained, Saints had to show their supporters that they could still compete against the best.

Now its the next step on, losing to Liverpool was almost acceptable, the Reds will be one of the top teams this season and few will leave Anfield with much, but with respect to the Baggies, West Brom at home is a completely different matter.

Saints now have to show that they can beat teams and pick up points and they have to start on Saturday and get the fans back on side.

Often its all about perception, Saints need to get back to winning ways and get the doubters back on side, anything less and those people will soon get on the teams back and that could make things that much harder this season.

Saints supporters and I appreciate that many already have that mindset, need to get the siege mentality going and make St Mary's a fortress, last season it was belief that drove us forward and we need that belief again, win a few games and it takes the pressure off both in terms of league position as well as pressure from the fans.

Saints are still a work in progress that is for sure, Saints took a big step last week and need to take a bigger one this, but we are in the middle of a rebuild, we need to consolidate and then march forward, there is a lot to look forward to, get behind the team and it will be a lot easier to achieve, names on the back of shirts change regularly, the name on the front never does.

Biggest home game for 9 Years? A slight exaggeration I think. True - a poor performance and a defeat would be depressing...

As mentioned on an earlier post, we struggled to break down West Brom in the same fixture last season due to MoPos rigid tactics. Based on last week, Koeman's team looks a lot more direct and this should help at home when teams sit back and play for a draw.

San Marco - Nick said biggest home game in the premier league..i.e. excluding the championship and league one. Have to agree - good performance and result is crucial
