Pompey need some good news regarding their defence after the 3-2 home defeat to Accrington Stanley at the weekend - and it has arrived in the form of news that Paul Robinson could stay at Fratton beyond January 5.

That's when his initial loan spell from Millwall is due to run out but the centre-half, one of Pompey's most consistent performers this season, says he is open to the idea of staying at Fratton.

Talking to The News after Saturday's loss, Robinson said: ‘There are two clubs involved, so I have been speaking to Millwall as well as speaking to Portsmouth. I need to reach an agreement with both sides for it to be something that works effectively for me.

‘I am looking to stay here. I enjoy working and playing here and playing for the manager. It’s a good group of lads and it feels like the club is very, very close to taking off.

‘It would be lovely to be part of the group of lads that makes that happen. We’ve been discussing a loan extension and a permanent deal so we will see what happens. Millwall haven’t said I’m free to go at the moment, so there are still plenty of discussions to be had.

‘It only takes a couple of suspensions or injuries and it can all change. So we will just have to wait and see what materialises. I’ve really enjoyed my time here. It’s a great club. These things always seem to drag out a little bit but hopefully something can get sorted.’

Still in defence, manager Andy Awford has backed Ben Chorley to recover from his very bad at the office against Accrington.

The former Stevenage man took the brunt of the criticism for the Blues' woeful display at the back but Awford says he is a good pro who will bounce back.

Pompey are next in action on Saturday, at Cheltenham.
