All Too Easy - Gomis And Ayew Ensure Swans Beat Newcastle

Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew were both on target for the second week running as the Swans started their Liberty Stadium campaign for the season with a comfortable 2-0 win, over what it has to be said is a very poor Newcastle United side.

There will probably not be too many easier outings for the Swans this season but you can only beat the team that is placed in front of you and that is exactly what we did with a professional and sound performance that never really reached the heights of last week.

That said it didn't need to reach that level thanks to the difference in the quality of the opposition but we still managed to score two excellent goals and could have had far more especially when you consider we hit the woodwork twice as well as forcing some good saves from Tim Krul. Talking of Tim Krul it would probably be an idea if Steve McLaren told him that when his side is 2-0 down some urgency on the ball is probably what they need rather than his lethargic approach to taking a goal kick.

Newcastle were of course not helped by the sheer stupidity of Daryl Janmaat who was sent off for two yellow cards in the first half. When you have been booked already for a challenge then the last thing you should do is to pull the shirt of Montero when he has gone past you. He gave the referee no choice and for the second week running the Swans were up against ten men.

As you could have predicted before the game there was little change in the Swans line up with Ki not making the bench following the injury he picked up last week so it was the same looking Swans side with only Cork for Ki as the change from the side that started last Saturday.

We had already had two good chances from Shelvey and Sigurdsson when the excellent Shelvey created the first goal. And it was a real joy to watch as he slipped the ball through three defenders to Gomis who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net to give the Swans the lead. If there were any first home game nerves then this early strike ended it and what a way it was to score it.

It was the kind of goal that had the pass been made by Messi, Rooney or Barkley then it would get far more mention then it will do as it was Shelvey but it was an absolute brilliant piece of football that sums up what Swansea City are all about.

We had to wait though quite some time for the second which came early in the second half when Montero crossed and Ayew headed the ball past Krul to double the Swans lead.

That really ended the game as a contest and Newcastle never threatened to even look like pulling a goal back and the Swans introduced Dyer and Routledge before a resounding welcome to Leon Britton who was a late replacement for Sigurdsson - hope that isn't the last time we see him in a Swansea shirt.

One time Swans transfer target Aleksander Mitrovic came on late on and was booked within the minute for the second week running. If his first two substitute appearances are anything to go by then we got a lucky break by not signing this idiot.

The Swans saw out the game with some more chances but, as stated earlier, this was an easy an afternoon as we will get this season but it's four points from six and onto Sunderland next week.
