Rehman joins Bradford on loan

Defender Zesh Rehman has joined League Two outfit Bradford City on loan following his return from a similar deal at Blackpool.

Rehman’s unhappy time at QPR seems to be coming to an end with the announcement of this deal - his contract runs out in the summer and he is almost certain to be shown the door at the end of his three year deal.

Rehman was signed from Fulham buy Gary Waddock for £250k in the summer of 2006, ostensibly to replace Danny Shittu after he had left for Watford. He started well enough but quickly became a target for the boo boys at Loftus Road after a series of poor displaysmost infamously in a 3-3 draw at home with Norwich where Huckerby and Earnshaw ran him ragged.

The Pakistan international’s standing among supporters was not helped much by Waddock’s replacement John Gregory who used Rehman as a makeshift full back or wing back when he used him at all - if Rehman had struggled at centre half in the Championship that was nothing compared to his torment at the hands of the division’s left wingers.

Luigi De Canio used him as a centre half last season and Rehman’s performances improved immeasurably under the Italian. He was our best centre half in many games last season but never won the fans over completely and his last appearance in a competitive game for the R’s was on the final day of the 2007/08 season against West Brom when he was the man of the match - he has appeared 49 times in two and a half seasons at QPR and has often been praised for his extensive charity and community work off the field.

Rehman was loaned to Championship side Blackpool at the start of this season and, despite insisting he was promised first team football by Pool boss Simon Grayson, he made just four substitute appearances in half a season at Bloomfield Road.

Bradford, currently seventh in League Two under the guidance of former Scotland international Stuart McCall, represent a much needed fresh start for Rehman who should really be able to play in a suit at that level. Rehman has signed on at Valley Parade until the end of the season including the plkay offs should Bradford get there and, as he will be available on a free in the summer, may yet make the move permanent should he impress.
