League Cup woe for Walkes and Pompey Wednesday, 15th Aug 2018 00:12 by pompey-fans.com staff Anton Walkes has a habit of scoring at Fratton Park - he did it on his debut last season and netted a scorcher in the friendly with FC Utrecht last month. Against AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup he did it again, but at the wrong end - putting in an own goal that dumped his team out at the first hurdle. He turned a cross into his own net with two minutes left to see the Dons go through. Pompey took the lead five minutes into the second half when Christian Burgess headed in a Gareth Evans corner. Joe Pigott equalised on 76 minutes with a nice header after a cross from the right. As penalties loomed, another right-sided cross led to Walkes putting it past his keeper to continue Pompey's poor run in this competition in recent years. Boss Kenny Jackett told the Pompey website: 'We got the breakthrough and it’s the third match on the trot that we’ve managed to find the first goal. That’s encouraging and then from that point I was really looking for us to try to take the game on and maybe win it well. It didn’t happen that way and Wimbledon scored a good equaliser, while the ending was a real sucker punch.'
