Jake Bidwell transfer speculation increases
Sunday, 15th Aug 2021 11:19 by David Cornish

Jake Blidwell, a player who has adapted extremely well to Swansea City’s wing back position has held talks with the swans regards a new contract. Currently he can leave Swansea in June on a free transfer. Remarkably he is being linked with a cash move to a number of clubs.

Bidwell has been told that if another club is interested in his services and the deal works for all parties then he can leave Swansea City. It won’t be on a free or anywhere near it though. The 28 year old defender has enjoyed a relatively successful time in west Wales providing numerous assists over the last two seasons. Joining from QPR on a free transfer his performances have been admired at times, and they have now thrust him in to the transfer spotlight.

Swansea City would accept in the region of £450k for Bidwell with Middlesbrough, Peterborough and Millwall interested in his signature. His defensive and attacking flair since he has been converted to a more energetic wing back role being the main attraction. With Ethan Laird coming in to the club today and Joel Latibeaudiere being preferred at the moment the player has a clear option this week. The swans have been honest with him and stated he can negotiate a deal to leave. Russell Martin too wants a more physically stronger and quicker defensive wing back to introduce into his philosophy at Swansea.

Bidwell is one of the the more higher earners at the club currently on £11,100 a week which is a big dent in the clubs financial outlay. The hierarchy are looking to support Russell Martin as quickly as possible in rejuvenating a Swansea squad needing freshening up. Jake Silverstein is currently in the country and was at last nights game against Sheffield United. Russell Martin has also had conversations with him and the board regards new players to come in the next two weeks, but to move Bidwell on quickly would certainly increase his options before the transfer window closes.

The club has been stocking up on 19-22 year old's with very little game time but high potential. If they are going to stay at the club room must be made for them and incoming academy players. Cutting wages of these good but ageing pros might allow for keeping Grimes and Roberts with increased wages offset. Smith, Bennett, Fulton, Naughton, Hamer, Routledge are all in this group. Dhanda his still quite young but has been given plenty of opportunities.
