Is Bothroyd the mystery man?
Is Bothroyd the mystery man?

A local rag in the West Midlands area is suggesting that Leeds and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been in talks over Jay Bothroyd.

For some days now, the official site has been (rather pointlessly) telling us that we’ve reached a deal with some other club about an unnamed player, and that they’re not going to tell us who it is. Not for now anyway. Should the suspense be killing us, or is it really nothing to get excited about?

I was hoping that the mystery man was going to be young Maynard from Crewe, especially as the Gresty Road mob have reportedly received a bit for their promising striker that meets their valuation of the player.  But the Wolverhampton Express & Star are suggesting that the player Leeds want is actually Jay Bothroyd. Or maybe not.

Rather confusingly, the paper says that “Wolves have confirmed Leeds’ interest in the 26-year-old, but there is no confirmation that the player McAllister wants is Bothroyd”. Make of that sentence what you will. The paper quotes Macca as saying “I don’t want to show our cards too much, but we have agreed terms with a club for another player. It’s not completed and I’d rather wait before I say who it is.” Glad we got that sorted out.

All of which leaves the crucial question of whether or not Bothroyd is actually any good. Not at Championship level it seems, as Wolves have told him he definitely has no future with the club and is highly unlikely to play for the first team again. That means if he will be left behind when the squad depart for their three-match Scottish tour on Saturday.

The paper has suggested that main stumbling block appears to be whether Bothroyd, who has a year left on his contract, can be persuaded to leave Molineux, rather than any disagreement over the fee. Maybe the problem is wages, as Ken Bates has said that we won’t be paying over the odds for any players, so perhaps Bothroyd would be able to earn more by playing in the reserves for a year than he would by coming to Leeds.

We can but hope that he will be good enough at League One level, but it doesn’t appear that he will be that much of an interesting signing. He would probably be a squad player at best, as it doesn’t sound like he will be any better than the players we already have. So if he doesn’t want to come to Elland Road for the wages we can afford to pay, then good riddance to him.
