Two fast central strikers in a 4 4 2 formation 21:39 - Feb 1 with 1544 viewsApex

When will these foreign managers stop trying to look progressive and play a proven 442 or 4411 formation, to play one lone central striker (espedially one without pace that Sadio had) is a recipe for disaster and religation is getting closer now. Leister won the league useing a 442 formation then they changed it, look where they are now, I hope someone considers this example a wake up call.

When Saints play one central striker we are in effect inviting apposing full backs to push up ten yards and that in turn allows their midfield players to advance and reinforce their attack, that puts additional pressure on our defence making it necessary to play five defenders to try to cope. This is schoolboy stuff that professional managers should know but apparently some don't.

I hate to say it because the board did there best but Mr Puel seems to be totally out of his depth in the English Premiership, it is not a wise thing to get the whole team in the box when defending a corners, at least one player with pace should be outside to challenge for balls that are cleared by our defence before they are lobbed straight back in by the opposition for a surprise second attack.

I can understand the need to rotate the players before but we are not playing in Europe now, it's looking like even the players are confused as to were they should be during a game. It would seem like Mr Puel is trying destperately to please his bosses by playing improving youngsters, this is a critical time for saints and the priority now should be to play the strongest side regularly in a 442 formation. With Shane Long and another fast striker up front in a central position we might have a chance getting our winning ways back, Romeo in a central midfield position would be great but a 4 4 2 fomation is a must, perhaps if the supporters chanted Quatre Quatre Deux Mr Puel might get the message.

We looked great when we switched to 4231 last night with Boufal playing as a 10, only shame is we were already 2-1 down.

The apposing manager will think Christmas has come early if he see his defence only having to deal with one striker, don't take my word for it watch how this lone player spends most of the next match running from defended to defender trying to get possission of the ball.

Usually the two centre haves back up off of a lone striker ten yards to make it even harder for him to challenge for possession, they also have time to clear and pass a good ball foward, this is why we spend so much time in our own half of the pitch under constant pressure. Smart managers know this ons striker system can be countered by attacking with numbers with little to fear in their own defence.
Loosing Virgil is a massive blow for Saints but Puel has to adapt and quite honestly I don't think he will change, if he dogmaticly sticks to his negative one striker policy with five defenders there can be only one outcome. If Puel could put Ronaldo up front on his own the result would be the same, if the opposition pushed up and attacked in numbers (and without Vigil tiding up at the back) we'd lose again.

You have to stop them constantly driving us back into our own half by giving them something to worry about, the only thing that works is 442 formation with two fast central strikers who would draw four defenders.

442. Biggun up there with a littlun. Nippy ones on the wing. Get it Forward quickly. Get it in the mixer.

After 3 years of it being obvious to 99% of us a foreign manager finally gets it and implements 4-4-2 at last. We must wrap Shane Long in cotton wool , he may not score many but the way he endlessly runs around he makes the 4-4-2 seem like 4-4-3 to our opponents.

Trust no one in a circus.
