I think it's a fantastic idea as it will protect us men from being arrested for sexual assault. They have trialled this in other countries and it's been a raging success. If it works here plans are already in the pipeline to extend the scheme to child only carriages to protect them from paedophiles and OAP carriages to protect everyone else from the smell.
A statement from the architect of the plan said "This plan will cut sexual assaults on trains by 100%. The current strategy of identifying, arresting and prosecuting the scumbags who assault women clearly isn't working. Here at the Labour Party we feel that treating all men as rapists who can't control themselves and segregating them from all women forever is the most proportionate response to this issue" |  |

The Institute for Fiscal Studies publish the figures each year.
The average pay gap at present in the U.K. is 18% (the highest in the EU incidentally). Some of that will, of course, be caused by children causing women (more often than men) to take a career break.
However, looking at the figures prior to children (so taking that element away from the figures), women still earn 10% less on average than men. (After children it's 33%).
Women with degrees earn 20% less than men with degrees. Women with A levels 25% less than men with A levels.
Companies are now, for the first time, required to publish their gender pay gap. It'll be interesting reading.
All this is, of course, despite pay discrimination being theoretically illegal for many years. |

I think there are women-only coaches on trains in Delhi and other major Indian cities where the incidence of sexual assaults on trains is of off the scale.
There should also be special K*nt coaches for the likes of Dailew, Highjack and Mo Wives.
In an ideal world they would not be able to board a normal coach due to the large K mark forcibly branded into their foreheads by functionaries of the coming Revolutionary Govt.
Said coaches will have no seats, benches or windows. |

Of course it's not going to, but the sad fact is that sexual assault against women on trains has increased dramatically.
Although it's a tiny proportion of men that are abusive, I don't know of any woman in London who at some point or another has not been groped on public transport. Not one.
And the reduction of staff on trains has meant that the intrinsic feeling of safety which comes from guards walking up and down, or staff with drinks trolleys etc etc (the lack of conductors on London buses has caused an issue as another example) has meant women feel less safe.
It's also been exacerbated by the ridiculous exposure that young men now have to pornography, which has led many to assume that women are 'up for it' or 'fair game'.
Unfortunately women don't feel any safer as a result of other men, who wouldn't think of attacking a woman themselves, somehow finding the whole issue to be really quite amusing. As evidenced on this thread yet again. It's pretty sad. |
I'm sure most of us on here don't find that idea amusing in the slightest Lisa. I think the barbs were aimed at Labour's attempt at social engineering that is simply doomed to fail. The common sense approach ( which they appear to increasingly lack) is to look at the root causes. I suspect you are right in suggesting the availability of online porn is fuelling increasingly misogynistic attitudes, but there is also a real unwillingness amongst the political classes to ask uncomfortable questions. Are there cultural reasons for the increase in sexual assaults? Has there been any profiling work done on the social, cultural or ethnic origins of those responsible? Do we look to invest more time and money in education- as we struggle to understand our changing society, let alone come to terms and cope with some of its less positive manifestations? These are all difficult questions to ask, let alone answer. One thing I do know, is that demonising, by implication, all men and presenting them as a collective threat is not the way to promote a cohesive society. We need to protect women, and all citizens who feel vulnerable in public spaces- but segregating women is not the answer for a liberal, inclusive and democratic society. Our forebears would be horrified. |  |
