We dug a hole and put in an old corner bath. Filled it with tap water and a few water plants from the neighbours. Six years later its full of newts, various insects and frogs. we use a small solar fountain to keep it oxygenated. Water keeps filled by rain water and is clear. No fish as we don't want tadpoles eaten.

Hello Fishman, I've got a question from an anonymous former poster here who's texted me to ask you :-

"What is the best filter for a Koi pond and is a bottom drain necessary?"

Please answer as the old b*gger is plaguing me on whattsap.

Each time I go to Bedd - au........................

Hi ,yep a bottom drain would be the best ,but its also the most work to install ,as for filter ,there is no real "best" a lot of it comes down to personal choice and budget ,its usually a multi chambered affair ,to enable getting the most filter media working.
The main thing is to make sure ,in particular with Koi that the filter is oversized ,the bigger the better ,we are talking fish that can ,in the right conditions grow to a meter in length ,although thats unlikely in the UK ,because of weather fluctuations
Again more than happy to offer face to face advice if he wants to pop in ,[ no hard sell ]
