Nigel Clough's comments 12:55 - Aug 15 with 1373 viewsjiggyjag

Derby County manager Nigel Clough tells BBC Radio Derby his side's bizarre Capital One Cup penalty shoot-out exit at the hands of Scunthorpe after a 5-5 draw was down to a combination of naive defending and wayward finishing.

Well being 3 nil and 4 - 1 up how can you blame wayward finishing yes you can question the defence but why not be honest that the team just wasn't good enough and yet again failure to buy quality players and let go your rock in the heart of the defence leave is the true cause.

Get real Mr Clough stop making excuses and hiding behind the board speak the truth just like your great father would of done.

It's certainly not very satisfactory, although NC also conceded that his timing and choice of substitutions late in the game may have disrupted the team's efforts to see it out from a seemingly safe position.

Many of those players should now be looking at themselves and be honest about whether they applied an acceptable level of effort and professionalism.

If we can't defend against Scunthorpe, we'll be very lucky to get anything out of Sheff Wed. on Saturday.

The Rams are now set up for a fall - they've already blown a game (& Cup run) big style and will face a promoted team that is on an upward charge.

A draw at best on Saturday, I reckon.
