I read fitzochris's article and he raises a lot of good points, however my take on the future is more depressing. For instance the astronomical price tag attached to Gareth Bale means we are entering a time when only a few clubs can buy and induce the very best players to break their contracts. Currently I think there are only about 11 to 13 clubs who can afford these ridiculous sums and soon they will become 'the elite' forcing clubs such as Liverpool and Tottenham to become part of a lower order. Eventually I see these super clubs breaking away to form a pan-European league, leading to the ultimate, a pan-World league. When this happens the Oligarchs and Sheiks will probably kick FIFA into touch and the football world as we know it will cease to be so cosily parochial.
