I'm a big fan of Canas. He gives us an attacking option from the defensive midfield role which has been a bit of a weak spot in previous seasons. As big a fan of Leon as I am, there's times when Canas will get the nod ahead of him for that reason, maybe on a regular basis.
I don't like the balance of the midfield today though. Too often all of them were the wrong side of the ball and too often neglected their defensive duties. Against a better team we could have been punished. It needs tweaking, although I'd like to see that done on the training ground before we resort to personnel changes.
Still, a bit of a realignment of expectations. From what I've seen of the start of the season, we still look a level or two below the top teams but are not far off the best of the rest. It's a good place to be.
Oh, and a word about Pablo. Nice to see my faith is being repaid. He's still a bit of a liability defensively (although why on earth he's even in the box to defend corners is a mystery to me) but offensively he's the cutting edge we've often lacked. To think we made a profit on the Sinclair deal. |  |
