Town have announced that Academy manager Sammy Morgan will be stepping down at the end of the month. Former Northern Ireland international striker Morgan, 65, has been at Playford Road since 2004, initially as head of education, stepping into his current role in 2009.

Morgan said: “I have been proud and privileged to have led the Academy over recent years, but the introduction of EPPP is an opportune moment to hand over the reins and responsibilities.

“With the knowledge and experience I have gained over the years I look forward to continuing my involvement in the game. I am extremely proud of my association with Ipswich Town and my contribution to the Academy.

“I look forward to following their fortunes in the future particularly with reference to those young players who have come through or who are presently in the Academy system.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg added: “I’d like to thank Sammy Morgan for his huge contribution to our Academy over the last eight years.

“Over this time he has been responsible for developing a number of high profile players, including Connor Wickham and I know that many are extremely grateful for his support and guidance. On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to wish him well for new challenges that may lie ahead.”

Morgan, who was with Aston Villa, Port Vale, Brighton, Cambridge, Sparta Rotterdam, Groningen and Gorleston in his playing days, was previously with Norwich’s Academy and has also worked as a teacher in Gorleston.
