The Mystery of Messrs Jackett and Gurney

However, I am not one who thinks that he can do no wrong, and I am mystified by the apparent change in fortunes of Andy Gurney.

I thought Gurney was one of Jackett's best signings last season, as he came with a good pedigree at a higher League level, and brought some resilience to our team that for several years has been kicked around by the cloggers that are part of almost all teams in the lower two divisions. Whatever it is called this year, we are in the Third Division, not La Liga. I thought he did very well for us, except on one occasion when, apparently he was under the weather from flu, and had to play as nobody else was available. Unfortunately, some of our own fans took a dislike to Gurney and he became the latest target of our boo-boys who seem to need someone to barrack (OK, I know I felt exactly the same about Durkin….).

I have no inside information, and it may be that Andy Gurney's transfer listing and subsequent absence from the team sheet, may be entirely related to form matters. However, how a player who was frequently captain last season, and has been a first team choice at a number of clubs for several years, can suddenly not be worth considering even on the bench, is a bit of a mystery, and may be down to something else.

We had a similar situation develop between Brian Flynn and Andy Mumford, and the apparent complete loss of empathy between manager and previous player of the year, was ultimately to the disadvantage of player and manager, but, much more importantly, did the team and club no favours. Right up-to-date, and at the highest level, Grahame Souness' seeming similar inability to deal with the super-talented but highly difficult Craig Bellamy, left him last weekend with just the ageing legs of the great Alan Shearer up front.

Pro footballers, in general, have since their pre-teen years, lead a strange sheltered upbringing, with the exception of people like Steve Jones, who always said that his previous work on a building site, made him eternally grateful to be a football player. So dealing with a group of grown men, some of whom act like prima donnas, is part of the skill of being a successful football manager.

Right now we need a fit and motivated Andy Gurney at right-back. Alan Tate is doing his best, but is not there yet as a full-back. Sam Ricketts has always seemed happier at left-back, and anyway this season so far, is a shadow of the player we saw in the first two thirds of last season, no doubt due to not recovering from the abdominal muscle injury that plagued him from March onwards.

So, Kenny - find a way to bury the hatchet with Andy. It is a test of your man-management. I doubt if Gurney is a man who can be brow beaten, so maybe a straight conversation between two adults is the best means of sorting out any differences that exist. The present situation is not one that is in the interest of player, manager or club.

I have great admiration for our assistant manager, Kevin Nugent, and hope that one day he may develop into an in-house replacement as manager, when Kenny Jackett, after a successful time with Swansea, gets a Premiership job. However, I think that in this appointment, Mr Jackett has fallen into the same trap as Mr Nick Cusack, i.e. being an inexperienced manager and appointing an even less experienced assistant. How much more help would be a gnarled old pro of the likes of a Colin Addison, Frank Burrows or the late Billy Ayres. This sort of "father-figure" would have the confidence and stature to take Kenny Jackett aside when he is making an error and provide a quiet word of advice. Perhaps our Chairman can play the same role now and discretely suggest to Mr Jackett that he take a step back and think a second time about Mr Gurney.
