Contracts Extended & Transfer Window To Be Moved

The summer transfer window will be moved and contracts ending on 30 June will be extended for a short period under proposals agreed by football's major stakeholders according to media reports.

The BBC is reporting that they understand talks initiated by world governing body Fifa and including confederations, federations, clubs, players and leagues have reached agreement over a number of issues arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic.

All parties now accept that completing the 2019-20 season by 30 June, as initially hoped, will not happen.

That being the case they are planning for those issues that will arise including that there will be players out of contract on June 30th and the need to move the transfer window presumably to start after July 12th the current working date for the Premier League and other major European Leagues to be completed and then closing later than the September 1st date currently in the calendar, something that Premier League clubs had agreed to do after the experiment of last summer when our window closed when the season started.

Again this shows that the plan is in place for football to restart, but obviously it will be dependent on how the next 2 months pan out and in that respect nothing is guaranteed.

All this talk about transfer windows may remind some older fans of the time when there was no "window" and players could be bought /sold at any time throughout the year - as long as they didn't sign on a Sunday.

Saints are certainly not alone having ( historically) signed players at various times outside of the present "window" dates. The idea of having the current fixed transfer windows was eventually approved as many clubs thought it unfair / unethical when a club (with plenty of cash) could buy an extra striker - say at Easter - to help them get promotion or save them from relegation - whereas clubs who were hard up for finance might have to continue to struggle and pay the consequences of failure .
It was of course hard on clubs who might suddenly lose their key striker, or star defender with no chance of getting an adequate replacement ..but there are always two sides to the coin and now most clubs seem to find players in the present situation.

Certainly the current dates seem unworkable as we are still awaiting the re-start of this season, and the thought that a sudden powercut, or a burnt out fax machine might scupper transfer deals if a huge volume of last-minute deals are being forced through in a short period of time.

However I have (recently) read that there might be extended times after the Corona delay is over, and we may see it going back to the old syatem-at least for a while.
