Andy Griffin signed for the Rams for an undisclosed fee from Portsmouth on July 31st 2007, Billy Davies' 7th signing of the January transfer window.

Wigan born Griffin joined Stoke City as a teenager, where his impressive performances caught the attention of Newcastle United, who secured his services with a £1.5m move to Tyneside.

Griffin was at St James' Park for over six years, making three U-21 appearances for England during that time as well as over 100 for United. At the end of the 2004 season, ahe became a free agent and moved from the North East to the south coast and a spell with Portsmouth, for whom he made 43 senior appearances.

Initially, he found it hard to win the Pompey fans over but his tough tackling style and consistent performances eventually won the day. However, he appeared to be out of Harry Rednapp's plans for the 2006/7 season and returned to Stoke City on a season long loan.
