RamZoners interview Colin Todd
RamZoners interview Colin Todd
Wednesday, 27th Aug 2008 21:22

We asked RamZone regulars to send in questions to Colin Todd and here you can read his answers about playing with Roy McFarland and why he signed the infamous Francois Grenet.

Mick McDermott asks:
What do you think of the lack of defenders in the world today with your flair and do you think you, Roy McFarland, Emelyn Hughes and such like would have made it in today's game?

The ability of players in the era I played was as good if not better than today's defenders. Myself and McFarland with others were born too early meaning we would have still been great players - but would have been millionares...

marklaa asks:
Did Andy talk to you about his move to Derby prior to him signing for us? If so, what did he say and what advice did you give him?

I adviced him - but he makes his own decisions. I said to him you must be playing c/back, which is your best position, unfortunately it did not happen.

Imarammantoo asks:
Why in your autobiography do you not give too many pages to your time at Derby?

My producer was the one who decided - and I did say to him my best days were at Derby. More time should be given to the Derby days.

Do you still keep in touch with Roy McFarland? And how did you two keep some of the best attackers in the business quiet?

Yes - having ability eg reading the game, both of us had football intelligence and were very clever defenders.

camelogue asks:
What qualities do you believe Brian Clough had to make him such a fantastic manager and what have you learnt from him?

His ability to get the best out of the players - he was management brilliant - taking the pressure off the players.

The difference between Danish football and English? Are there any players in Denmark we should have a closer look at?

We play in the SAS league, which could not compete at premier level - some good young talent, but would have to be given more time at the big clubs.

Drill_sergeant asks:
When you signed Francois Grenet for Derby you said "He is the 2nd best right back in France after Lilian Thuram". In all honesty, did you actually see the player in action before you signed him ?

I was recommended by scouts who had seen him. For the first time, I watched 3 games of DVD, I normally go and see, but because reports were good from scouts, I decided to watch DVD - I might have been misquoted by journalists on what I said.
