Sam Edozie Set For A Move To Belgium Wednesday, 4th Sep 2024 14:08 Southampton are looking to trim their squad and it seems that they have decided that Sam Edozie is deemed surplus to requirements, a deal to Rangers in Scotland fell through on transfer deadline day, but with an extra week in the transfer window for Belgium clubs, it seems that Saints have found a suitor for the winger. According to several media outlets including sportwitness.co.uk Southampton have agreed a deal with Anderlecht in Belgium for winger Sam Edozie. He will initially go on a season long loan, with an option to buy at the end of the spell, so far the cost of the permanent deal if that option is exercised is unclear. Edozie joined from Manchester City in the summer of 2022. still aged just 19, it was inevitable he would struggle as other more experienced players around him collapsed themselves. Last season he would start 16 games in the regular season Championship as well as another 16 off the bench, scoring 6 times and with another 3 assists, not a bad ration for only 1,364 minutes of football, a goal every 227 minutes. Some of those goals made a difference, a winner against QPR, the winner against Blackburn if you want to be pedantic in that he opened the scorer in a 4-0 win and an equaliser at Coventry, he also contributed in the play offs against West Brom and at Wembley itself when he came on as a 35th minute substitute for David Brooks. So it would be rather uncharitable to call his two seasons here a waste of time or a disaster as some have suggested, indeed only Adam Armstrong & Che Adams scored more goals in the regular season than him and perhaps an indication of how comparing two players can sometimes see tow contrasting opinions, Ryan Fraser played a very similar number of games, but played 1,620 minutes, for his 6 goals and 2 assists. The Wee Man was a hero and Edozie not so much so, but he had more telling contributions, that perhaps tells you something. Now he will spend a season at Anderlecht and perhaps even join them permanently, if he does when you take into account low fee's and the option to buy fee, we should break even on the £10 million we paid for Sam, but even if we don't he played a part in last season, but didn't get the recognition that some did.
