Southampton Midfielder On Leeds United Radar.

Leeds United are preparing to flex their muscles a little bit as they return to the Premier League and it seems they have a Saints midfielder in their sights, but which one are the Yorkshire club after.

Leeds United News are carrying a report that Daniel Farke is after Southampton's Shea Charles.

The now 21 year old who arrived at St Mary's in the summer of 2023 from Manchester City for a fee of around £10 million and was said to be a favourite of Pep Guardiola, struggled for a regular game in Russell Martin's promotion winning side, starting just 15 games with another 17 off the bench.

As the season went on Martin seemed to marginalise his involvement in the team and he would play just 4 games in the final 14 regular games of the season and just 1 minute in the 3 play off games, a cameo against West Brom at St Mary's as we looked to run the clock down.

On 3 occasions he didn't even get on the bench, although he got splinters in his rear end in all the other games.

Put out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday he played in all 43 games he could have been involved in and only 1 was off the bench.

He would be player of the season at Hillsborough and Southampton supporters were hoping that he would repeat this form in the coming season.

But it seems that Leeds have other ideas and the claim is that Daniel Farke is looking to bring him back to Yorkshire.

Of course this is just rumour at the moment, but with 2 years left on his contract Saints won't offload him cheaply, if Flynn Downes who kept him out of the side is worth £16 million, then Charles is worth at least £20 million.

But I hope that he stays at St Mary's, if he does then he could well play a major part next season.

A Sheffield Wednesday fan told me Shea Charles was not just Player of the Season, but the best player in a Wednesday shirt for several seasons. Saints should make him captain and build a team around him.

I'd also prefer to keep Shea Charles in the squad for next season, a year older with the benefit of a full season behind him it makes no sense if he fits into Will Still's plans.
As for going to Leeds, I can imagine a situation where the team struggle, Farke gets replaced and Charles goes first to the bench and then back out on loan. Not exactly progress.

Keep, especially if there is a risk that Downes goes to Rangers

This is why he should never have gone on loan..

dirk change your pijamas , Saints have jsut enjured a season with minimal investment low wages and PL money. Lazy journalism all over the place has us having a firesale with 50% off . Downes to Rangers at half price and THB belis to West ham at a loss, Ramsdale to anyone as we "have to sell having been relegated". The only player realistically we have to sell is Ramsdale as its safe to asume he doesnt have a massive wage reduction clause in his contract. Shea Charles is on 6k a week who would we get for that? £15m wouldnt make sence. To make an actualy profit we would need to find some similar and pay thier wages for £5m!
