....a flash in the pan.

We're 5th, imagine where we'd be if we'd got something against Southampton, Newcastle & Stoke. I know it's small margins at this level, but we could easily be in 2nd spot, not Saints.

Let's hope Citeh are kind enough to have an "off day" on 22 Nov, just like the Gooners did yesterday, eh

Yeah I would love it if we were in 2nd, we probably should have held out against Southampton at home, beaten Newcastle and if we had taken our chances with no dodgy penalty too could have come back from Stoke with all three points. 24 points on the board in second, a point ahead, of Southampton that would have been cracking.

I was thinking about the Newcastle game watching MOTD last night. It was certainly 2 points dropped, but Newcastle's results since make me feel less annoyed about it. Would Pardew still have been there to go on this run had we beaten them?

On topic, I love that we're flying under the radar. Let the media and public go on thinking the teams we beat are always having a bad day. Sadly, I don't think many opposing managers are that dull.

You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.

Exactly....and the majority of the media are not even smart enough to recognise or prepared to acknowledge that GM is not "big club obsessed" like ML was.

None of this ML nonsense of leagues with the league, no inferiority complex. There are points to be competed for in EVERY game....I LOVE IT

When people say this sort of thing i always feel it important to draw attention to the following point...

When people talk about the games we "should" have won they often don't take into their calculations the games we "shouldn't" have won - on paper at least. We have won against Man Utd away and Arsenal home and nobody would have batted an eye lid if we had lost both.

Southampton are second and i don't see a defeat to them with 10 men as dropped points, same with Stoke away - it was never going to be easy. The only match I feel we "should" have picked up maximum points but didn't was Newcastle and that is only due to taking the lead twice, i did not think it was a certain 3 points before hand.

So, on balance, we have gained far more unexpected points than dropped expected ones in my opinion.

They've played Liverpool and Spurs, and lost to both.

Yes - if we'd won all 3 games I mentioned, we'd have 8 extra points & Saints would have had 3pts less....like I said, small margins.

I'm not referring (in advance) about games we "should" or "shouldn't" win, based on the opposition. I'm referring (in hindsight) to actual games that we "would probably have won or drawn" if it wasn't for poor refereeing, irrespective of the opposition, eg. Stoke.

I think this is bang on.

10 games is normally when the pack starts to shuffle itself into order and after 11, we are 2 goals off a Champions league place. What's even more remarkable than that is that 2 of the 4 teams above us were tipped to struggle this season. It may take a little longer to sort out this season, because United, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Everton are all capable of going on runs.

Breaking the games down, we should have got more points out of Newcastle and Southampton (possibly Stoke), but United, Everton, Arsenal, Sunderland even Burnley will feel that with a bit of luck they could have got more points against us. They didn't and that's how it goes. We are 5th on merit, but equally Southampton and West Ham are 2nd and 4th on merit.

Long may the media view us as.... on 13:41 - Nov 10 with 2876 viewsJoe_bradshaw

We have played 7 of the top 10 and we can't play ourselves so that's effectively 7 of the top 9. That could be argued to be a bit misleading because Liverpool and Spurs aren't in the top 9. On the other hand those clubs in the top half have got there by playing well and we've played most of them.

It's a crazy season so far and long may the craziness continue.

And we will still have at least 18 points after 12 games (i.e. 1.5 points per game average) once we have played City. The only 'top' team we won't have played then is West Ham.

While Southampton are going great I still think that Top 4 might be a push. When Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool and possibly Tottenham get going, or failing that, start spending a wad in January, they might struggle to keep up.

I hope they prove the doubters wrong though, even me. I love a good shake up of the football establishment.

And there was me thinking it was bad luck with injuries and a big fixture list. This despite rotation and having two players for every position. A problem which hits virtually every team that goes into Europe for the first time if after a long time away from such competitions.
I know - that is my perception.

I agree that the extra load is an issue... that said the approach to strength and conditioning in football is appalling.

If you have an increased fixture volume then you reduce the training volume, either in terms of shorter training sessions or more active rest days (cryotherapy chambers, massage and light cardio to aid recovery).

Our dearly departed Oscar Garcia decided to run the players until they were almost physically sick 2 weeks into pre season. Bad move. FIFA and UEFA medical officer Professor Jan Ekstrand has 10 years worth of research. The results - the bulk of soft tissue injuries are caused by fatigue and that coaches are responsible for this through their (poor) planning and over exertion in training

Interesting that Stoke for all their flaws don't do any maximal endurance tests. The result - less playing time lost to injury than any other club last year.
