Queen gets a £6m annual increase on 14:30 - Jun 27 by 1BobbyHazell | I'm sorry if you are upset by my reply Mytch. Just my honest opinion of what I felt was quite an unnecessary and over simplistic attempt to brexit-ise a thread. |
Thanks, Bobby - I was sort of joking (I promised myself after some of the Brexit threads that I would stay off these - I could feel my blood pressure rising!) To paraphrase Gandhi, even if I am in a minority of one that doesn't mean I am wrong.

If you'd been born in Derry / Londonderry under the same conditions you may feel differently. If you'd been born in a hut in the depths of the Congo you wouldn't even know she existed. The only loyalty we owe is to each other. All the pomp and ceremony is nice, but it won't feed your kids. [Post edited 27 Jun 2017 14:41]

Queen gets a £6m annual increase on 14:44 - Jun 27 with 1926 views | colinallcars | The Queen's position is largely titular. She has never actually refused to accept a prime minister when approached after an election although some say she came close with Harold Wilson. I think as long as the majority of folk want her to stay - and most I speak to do - then stay she does.

Fair do's brother. I think after two years of being a brexiter who supports Corbyn I've been battling on all fronts and have become sensitive to generalisations about group beliefs that lack the intelligence of nuanced ones and have seen me labelled as all sorts of things that I most definitely am not. I appreciate it may sound strange to a lot of people but I really think as a country we have a chance to move forward in a less polarised and divisive manner. Less simplistic categorisation is definitely an important kickstart part of the process.

I've worked almost my entire career in either academia or the NHS, none of which turns a profit, so do you put me, and come to think of it all teachers, lecturers and NHS staff in the same category of "lazy cúnt" ? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Save your breath Cliff. Take some comfort in knowing he'll say it to the wrong person one day and when he has his nose broken it'll be some 'lazy cúnt' like you or me that fixes it. [Post edited 27 Jun 2017 15:06]

Queen gets a £6m annual increase on 13:08 - Jun 27 by stevec | Yeah, she makes more than she takes. Be interested to know whether Jeremy Corbyn has ever been in a line of work where you actually turn a profit. Y'know, that stuff that pays for public spending. |
I doubt Corbyn's ancestors stole land off the people though right? That's how the Crown Estate came into being. [Post edited 27 Jun 2017 15:14]

Queen gets a £6m annual increase on 14:34 - Jun 27 by BrianMcCarthy | The day after the election she was the only person in Britain with any power. It was she that had the power to say yes or no to May as to whether she could form a Government. |
Let's have a bit of reality here, after the election Teresa May was the PM not only as incumbent but as leader of the largest party. She went to the Palace to tell the queen she could command the support of parliament and the queen was bound to accept. No way was she in power in any true sense. Now an elected head of state as many want would be in a far different position and would really hold power in such a situation

I know what you're saying, of course, John, and I realise that it's been ages since a Monarch refused assent. But the Queen was not bound to accept and s/he can refuse anytime s/he wants. And that just seems crazy to me that an unelected person has that power.

Without a written constitution you are correct in theory but in reality it is such a remote possiblilty I don't see it is anything to comment on. I come back to the point the Queen only has that "power" because parliament has said so and can just as easily vote to take it away we are not talking about a dictator here. In theory any leader with a majority can be refused by the Queen to be appointed PM but it just would not happen. There are far more crazy things in this world than the Queen having ceremonials powers Many want the monarchy removed nobody has ever suggested the Queen would use her power to keep it. If she was that powerful would that not be th case. [Post edited 27 Jun 2017 16:11]

The Queen's power is entirely nominal. If she tried to excercise it in any way other than the conventional she would cause a constitutional crisis which would result in either her removal or the abolition of the monarchy.

I think that they're all valid points, to be fair. I also think that every Nation should have somebody outside of and seperate from Parliament with powers to regulate Parliament. I just think that that person should be elected by and answerable to the citizens of that Nation, and anything else leaves me bemused and scratching my head.

Come on JC - you know all of us who come from, or still live on, a council estate are benefit scrounging scumbags. I know where I think that extra £6million should be spent - and it's not on a hereditary billionairess. Although that's a mere droplet in the ocean compared to the £369m (I kid you not) which has been earmarked to pay for the Buckingham Palace refurb. Yes I know 'it belongs to the nation' - how about putting some of those poor buggers from Grenfell Tower up there for a while then? [Post edited 27 Jun 2017 17:07]

Already explained that earlier, see reply to easthertR. I was clearly talking about those who spend our money not earn it, hence reference to Corbyn.
