Talksport ranked the 30 biggest football clubs in Britain on 14:45 - Sep 5 by Butty101 | “ Have paid out top ten wages at least once in their lifetime “ Shame you actually Couldn’t afford a wage bill like that and nearly 15years later you are still paying for such a legacy. |
We could afford the wage Bill. What we couldn't afford was the French government seizing our owners assets. The debt that clubs run up these days dwarfs anything Pompey had. Why do Soton only tick 1 box on that list. I'm going to do a slightly bigger club list next, and see how many of these clubs hold on. No point even looking at your club tbf, even though some say they are a big club.

Talksport ranked the 30 biggest football clubs in Britain on 15:51 - Sep 4 by 130yrs_and_one_Cup | It's not just about attendances, or the present time is it? A club goes up and down the tables due to success on the field, and money and coaching off it. The biggest clubs, are just obviously big, and sadly your club are nowehere near fulfilling any of the criteria of even a big-medium sized club. These clubs will have achieved the following A 32k average attendance at some stage in their lifetime Have won 2 Major Honours in a 10/15 year period. Have won Multiple Major honours Have hit the top ten attendances at least once in their lifetime Have paid out top ten wages at least once in their lifetime Have 4 continuous top 8 finishes at least once in their lifetime Have finished in the top 4 a number of times. All the following clubs have achieved almost all of the requirements on this list i.e Forest, Leicester, Sunderland, Villa, Derby, Boro, Wolves, WBA, West Ham, Sheff Utd, Wednesday, Charlton. Your club have only ever achieved one thing on that list, and you have to ask why that is . . ., as you have spent quite a few years in the top league now? [Post edited 4 Sep 2020 15:53]

Next level up. This is a fact based analysis, so bigger clubs will keep ticking the boxes, 7 boxes in all. A 35k average attendance at some stage in their lifetime Have won 3 Major Honours in a 10/15 year period. Have won 4 Multiple Major honours Have hit the top ten attendances at least twice in their lifetime 25 consecutive years in top flight Have 5 continuous top 8 finishes at least once in their lifetime Have finished in the top 4 at least 4 times 7 Sunderland, Wolves 6 Wednesday, Pompey 5 West Brom, Forest, Derby 4 West Ham 3 Leicester 2 Boro, Charlton 1 Soton Again, these are big years for your club, you should be hitting these boxes surely? YOU couldn't afford it, hence you spectacularly went bang again. As ever you are wrong with your comment "The debt that clubs run up these days dwarfs anything Pompey had." Most prem clubs are well under your debt level from a decade ago and more importantly can service the debt. How about adding to your list of random measures of what makes a medium size club. Since the start of the premiership, have had an average attendance for a season over 23k.

If Gao had his assets stolen by say the Chinese government, he would also be having a firesale, and stripping assets at the club ie selling players. If your club ended up with a new dodgy owner trying to get money back from Gao, you would see the same scenario. Clubs rise, clubs fall, the best measure of the potential size of a club is what they were able to achieve when things were going well. Your club doesn’t do very well. These are lean times for Pompey, but we’re still averaging 18k in a 18.5k stadium. Portsmouth’s debt is bigger than present clubs, really? Top 10: - Manchester United - £495.8m - Brighton & Hove Albion - £207.1m - Arsenal - £205.3m - Liverpool - £201.7m - Spurs - £180.4m - Sunderland - £161.7m - Newcastle - £152.3m - Stoke - £122,7m - Cardiff - £115.1m - Blackburn Rovers - £112.8m - https://oddschanger.com/sports-news/clubs-with-the-largest-debts-in-english-foot Why is your club ticking so few of those boxes above?

Again utter gash on your part. Your owner who was a war criminal and had his assets frozen. You bought the likes of David James, Glen Johnson, Sol Campbell and Defoe amongst others who should have been way our of your league. Averaging 18k crowds probably covered Campbells wages at best. It was always going to end badly. Our owner hasnt put a penny , meaning the club stands on its own 2 feet. When was the last time you had a average crowd over 23k?

Did the owner have his assets frozen? What was our worst debt , 58m? and that was after the crooks ran off with assets and loaded them onto the club, and even then nothing like today's debts. Gates don't count for much of the total income anyway, I thought you'd know that. If Gao's assets were frozen, he would immediately sell players, and claw back money from a club sale. That is a fact. Your club never paid for the stadium, you should never forget that, and could have been up to your ears in debt unless the new owner didn't write it off. Your club just got lucky at the time. We haven't had a 23k+ stadium for a quarter of a century, so unlikely, and never forget that until you built a bigger stadium, your club hadn't managed a 23k attendance since 1968, and those were your good times with a stadium that could hold 31k.

Maybe you should get yourself down there again, they were heady days for your club. What was there, 2 bigger clubs than you down there at the time, and 4 more successful clubs? so you were a proper big club in that league, and you won something. We are obviously the 2nd biggest, and 2nd most successful. Time to tick more of those boxes above, maybe win another proper trophy or finish in the top 4, but would be something for your club. Do you shower before you come on here or do you get your coifee and pancakes and sit down in front of the computer in your dressing gown ? I bet your keyboard is sticky with maple syrup or other such viscid substances.

No, we are not bigger and better at the moment, but it appears from the lists above that we are a bigger club, based on potential, success and consistency. Your club just need to sign another Kevin Keegan, or get in the top 4.

Oh right you mean England Internationals , perhaps a good guide to a clubs size would be the kind of player they attract or nurture. So could you tell me the figures for the last 10 years say of players who represented England in that time for both clubs whilst on the books of said club ?

No, just a big time player, and why would you restrict yourself to counting just England Internationals to have played with your club? We have probably had 125/130 Internationals play for their country while at Pompey. Not sure if you can match that, and bear in mind that years ago when Pompey were a proper big club, very few internationals played in England.

Oh right so an English club in an English league supplying players for their country don't count , I wonder why ? Perhaps this maybe ? Portsmouth FC 1900-2010 16 116 10 126 16 players 126 games in your entire history . Southampton FC 1899-2019 37 235 33 268 Saints 37 players in 268 games , I believe that's over twice as many and of course it does not include recent games. Quite a few clubs bigger than Pompey like Cambridge and Oxford University , Notts county. http://www.englandfootballonline.com/TeamClubs/MostPlyrs.html You suggested the English international Keegan so it looks like thought history Saints has a much bigger pull than Pompey. Thanks for the suggestion at last case closed.

As I said we have had 125/130 full Internationals played for their country while at Pompey, including Irish, Scots, Welsh, European, African, American and Asian. Not sure why English is so important. No denying it though, Signing Kevin Keegan was in the top 5 big moments for your club, right up there with 4 consecutive top 8 finishes, winning the cup and having millions of twitter followers.

I think you may be stretching the truth again with those figures I can see 80-90 in your history who got caps. In just one international break in 2018 Saints had 11 players called up for their countries. So if we extrapolate the figures as you have no evidence then I expect Saints to be in the 250-300 range for internationals. A world renown club recognised all over the world https://m.facebook.com/SaintsFCCanada/ ( sorry couldn't find any Pompey supporters club in Canardia )

why would i want my club to play in a lesser league? Why would i want less media coverage? Why would i want my club to not be able to sign good solid players instead of rejects like your club? Why would i want my club to not play at the pinical of English football instead of in the 3rd tier of English football? Why would any one think a club not seen in the top flight for nearlly 1000000000000000000 years has any relevence in talk of being a big club. The top four are considered the top four not because of where they finish but because they are the four biggest richest clubs in the league............. Didnt see Augero turn down City cause they was not as successfull 100 yeaqrs ago liek Liverpool was even though Liverpool was trying to sign him at the same time but he choose the bigger wage at City.. even players dont give a shit about what you have won, only how much they can earn.

Your owner didnt have his assets frozen , the stock market crash happened and you his dad was investigated for smuggling weapons. You might want to check history. Your owner didnt actually put money into the club - he took a load of loans on the club which he guaranteed. It was always going to end bitterly. A small club like yourself at the time couldnt sustain that sort of level of wage bill. Surely if Gaos assets where frozen he wouldnt be able to sell players as his assets are frozen....... As for "We haven't had a 23k+ stadium for a quarter of a century," shouldnt that be "We haven't NEEDED a 23k+ stadium for a quarter of a century," [Post edited 8 Sep 2020 14:07]

Portsmouth 146k followers population 238,147 Southampton 1.2m followers population 253,651 So just over 1/2 the population of Pompey follow the club whilst 5 times the population of southampton follow the Saints . Surely you must admit that Portsmouth have slipped into obscurity in the modern world ? |
Twitter is mainly used by nobs and non-entities. Pompey is definitely behind the curve on that particular site.

When Leicester won the league, they were not a top 4 size club. You have recently had 4 top 8 finishes, probably the biggest achievement ever for your club after finishing second in the league. That was a major success for your club, just enjoy it, it possibly won't ever happen again. As for our club, we have achieved more than your club this century, despite the collapse, and we even forfeited a chase for the 5th spot to concentrate on the FA cup. Your club have never been anywhere near the 5th spot for 30 years. [Post edited 8 Sep 2020 15:23]
