Without drilling into this in depth, it looks like a problem entirely of their own making.

According to reporting, the clubhouse and hospitality suite were apparently built in contravention of planning permission, and specifically it would appear installation of sound-proofing. The club have been under a noise abatement order for the last two and a half years which local residents claim has been breached 'dozens of times'.

Retrospective planning permission was denied because of the noise problem. That was also the reason why the council withdrew their entertainments licence. With the club unable to earn revenue outside of matchdays, they have responded by saying this will force them to close their academy as a cost-cutting measure. The council have offered £140,000 to finance the academy for a year, and asked the EFL to help out as well, but owner and former club chairman Andy Holt claims that's not enough to cover the lost revenue as well.

It reads as if all Andy Holt has to do is install the sound-proofing that should have been there in the first place, and get both retrospective planning permission and his entertainments licence back - but will he?

I remember the last time that Accrington Stanley went bust and could not finish the season. Col U lost 6 points as we had done the double over them.

1962, and probably cost us the title, finishing in second place one point behind Millwall. Still promoted though.

If only we'd done the double over them last season.

Accrington Stanley have confirmed they are going to close their academy, despite the offer of financial support from the council. In a statement released yesterday they make explicit reference to "The enforced closure of our function rooms, rising costs - such as National Insurance and minimum wage increases - combined with no forthcoming resolution to the club's planning issues have placed an ever-growing financial burden on our club and subsequently on our owner who is now in his 11th year of financially supporting Accrington Stanley FC". It should be noted that NI contributions and the minimum wage apply to every club, not just them.

The Accrington function rooms/bar is one of the better facilities where away fans are made welcome. Hopefully, this problem can be resolved.

Last season, I was disappointed just how unfriendly many clubs have become towards away fans, the worst being Bromley where we were refused entry to the adjacent club house and the nearest pub is too far for these old legs. Dire catering in the ground, and only one female toilet cubicle.

Salford is almost as bad. Harrogate was dreadful towards our disabled fans, and Port Vale is accessed by away fans up a boggy unlit dirt track, and we were refused entry to its clubhouse after many years of good behavior.

Hopefully, Barnet, Southend and Oldham away fan facilities have improved since our last visits. Thankfully, we won’t suffer the ghastly isolated FGR where ruminating cows are better catered for than the majority of humans.

If Accrington start crowd funding to resolve their problem, I’d donate a fiver to assist a proper fan focused club.

You’ll be okay Noah, the Accrington clubhouse will still be available. The withdrawal of their entertainment licence only relates to events outside of match days. Last time I was at Barnet I thought having our own bar under the stand, open throughout the match and for a while even after the final whistle, was first rate. Don’t remember if I tried the food though.
