Lucy Connolly sentencing appeal rejected 08:32 - May 21 with 622 viewsAnotherJohn

A few days have passed since three appeal court judges rejected Lucy Connolly's plea for a reduction of her 31 months sentence, and I sense that public disquiet about this judgement is growing. What Mrs Connolly said about migrant hotels was offensive, but there appear to be circumstances that mitigate the seriousness of the offense. Many are comparing Connolly's case with that of Ricky Jones, who was recorded on video stirring up a crowd about ‘disgusting Nazi fascists’ and telling them that ‘we need to cut their throats and get rid of them’, but is out on bail until August. My guess is that the recent court judgment will rebound on those who wanted a deterrent sentence by giving more credibility to the idea of two-tier justice.

Yes what she posted was terrible but she has certainly learnt her lesson, to turn down her appeal is farcical.

Groomers haven't received sentences as long as this, surely she could be let out on a tag, she's not going to offend again

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

Is this the same idiot who encouraged the burning down of migrant hotels and their occupants?

A politically motivated sentence utterly ridiculous
It's a sentence greater than those who career criminals who have changed people's lives , for the worst.
This country sickens me

What she said was of high culpability:-

Arguably under each point.

High culpability:

* Offender uses position of trust, authority or influence to stir up hatred (politicans wife)
* Intention to incite serious violence (Arson / murder)
* Persistent activity (history of racist comments online)

and category 1.

*Statement/publication/performance or broadcast directly encourages activity which threatens or endangers life (arson/murder)

*Widespread dissemination of statement/publication/performance broadcast (social media)

The starting point for that is a 3 year sentence. With a range of between 2 and 6 years.

The guidelnes for this came in to place in January 2020.

There are no grounds for appeal and she's lucky she's not doing an extra 5 months.

I agree its way too long, but the judge plus the appeal said it was appropriate.

Strange one.

Beware of the Risen People

And yet the same judge refusing her appeal released that Labour MP after being convicted of rapping a nine year old boy , a child .

"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

"Violent prisoners, including those convicted of sex offences and domestic abuse could be released after serving just a third of their sentence"

What's the difference with Connolly

I don't believe the early release applies to violent prisoners, unless you know otherwise

What an absolutely disgusting comment. A mother is sitting in a prison cell over a tweet, while her daughter waits at home — and you're out here saying she's lucky it wasn’t longer? Seriously?

There are people walking free after committing actual violence. Teenagers doing adult crimes who never see the inside of a cell. Drunk drivers who’ve killed people and still get off with lighter sentences. Nonces walking free, But you think this is where justice should come down hardest?

Your sense of morality is warped beyond recognition. Only you could look at this and think the system is being too lenient.

Not me. The sentencing guidelines for the offence she committed.

They may not indicate an appropriate sentence other crimes I won't disagree, but that's a different debate.

In this case the sentence is appropriate.

A responsible mother wouldn't have encouraged the burning of hotels and it's occupants. Maybe social should take a look at her
