Random request re. commercial lawyers 11:39 - Sep 6 with 1106 views | hubble | As LFW members have a wealth of knowledge and information, I was wondering if any of you can recommend a really good commercial/corporate lawyer? My brother sold his company last year; on paper the deal seemed really good, and he received his first of three scheduled payments without a problem. He was retained as MD for three years, but soon found himself sidelined, and the people who bought his company have proved to be reckless, treating the company more like a cash cow than a business, and now they have reneged on the second payment (a large sum). I'm fairly sure such an outcome was covered in the contract of sale, but these people are tricksy, and he needs a top lawyer to act on his behalf. He's based in Yorkshire. Can anyone recommend a good lawyer? Many thanks in advance.

Random request re. commercial lawyers on 14:05 - Sep 6 with 837 views | CFW | Hi Hubble - unable to recommend anyone as per your request but I have both bought and sold businesses in the past in similar circumstances. When I sold a business I was advised NOT to accept a three stage payment as in the majority of cases you never get the second and third payment. Hindsight, is a wonderful thing and guess what my advisor was quite right, never got my money. Company ended up going bust (unlike your brother I was nothing to do with the business once I sold) but people who had worked for me told me they were awful people to work for. I bought another business so the shoe was on the other foot but I gave personal guarantees the money would be paid by either the business or me. I am sure your brother would have guarantees in place, not sure that will help but wish him very good luck.
