I watched it closely at the game and I've watched it several times since. Most professional goalkeepers would have saved it. There was time to put his hands up. McCarthy's reflexes are always a bit too slow. He really isn't cut out to be a goalkeeper, which is what the previous clubs he was at discovered very quickly,.
In those near post situations, other goalkeepers put their arms up and make themselves big so there's no space above them for the ball to go into the net. McCarthy makes himself small so the ball always sails over his head into the net. He's like a rabbit in the headlights, afraid of getting hit by hard shots. He's not brave enough, his positioning is terrible and he never learns from his mistakes. He's conceded so many goals like that because opposition strikers all know about his near post weakness. Boro only had one shot on target all game. If they'd had another one, they'd have scored again from the same position.
McCarthy is just a terrible goalkeeper, worth an extra 20 goals to the opposition over a season. It was obvious we needed to get a better goalkeeper in the transfer window. [Post edited 28 Sep 9:18]
