Nigel Clough Appointed as Blades' Manager 13:43 - Oct 23 with 1831 viewspkay_brum

Nigel Clough has today been appointed manager of Sheffield United:

Nigel has takes coaching staff Crosby and Garner with him, and brother Simon Clough as a scout.

Sheff Utd for promotion, or a few years of steady rebuild?

Discuss!

** Just noticed an error on the official Sheff Utd announcement: they say Clough guided The Brewers into the Football League, but in actuality, he'd left for DCFC before the end of that promotion campaign - it was temp boss Roy Mac who actually took them up.

Clough's style is to look at the very long term, so avoiding the drop and incremental improvements to the squad is his likely approach. But he only has a 2 1/2 year contract...

Hi,

Could you please answer a few questions about Nigel Clough for Vital Sheffield United. I will obviously link in Ramzone.

What system does he usually like to play?

What can we expect tactically?

Will he make substitutions early when needed or are you left screaming at him to make changes with ten minutes remaining?

Did he have favourites who you couldn`t understand how they were still in the team?

Were you disappointed to see him leave Derby at the time of his dismissal?

Describe Clough in three words

Cheers in advance

Clough normally played 4 5 1 even at Home?
Tactically IMO he was lacking he had no Plan B & sometimes he hadn't even a Plan A?
He either makes no Subsitutions or when he does its usually the wrong ones at the wrong time!

Overall I'm please to see Clough go, he did a good job in promoting the academy youngsters into the first team & he did get us playing good attacking football but we were always prone to lose to teams who were physically stronger packed the midfield & caught us on the break especially at Home?

Good luck to Sehffield Utd hope Clough works ok for you, we will see?

Well, Dazza - I hope Nigel's first match in charge fulfilled your initial expectations and allowed you to form some impressions of his "style". What did you think?

The Blades seem to be recovering now from their early season slump, and NC has plenty of time to assess and rework his squad.

Taking on your initial questions below - here goes:

What system does he usually like to play?

It varied between 4-4-2 and 4-5-1 (even at home), with the premise being that flying full-backs would link with midfield & overlap to put balls into the danger area.
Unfortunately, we never had full backs or wide men that had the ability to put in those balls, so the attacks often broke down or stopped to become sideways "possession" tactics - not able to produce any end product of dangerous balls for goals. We've also lacked a really consistent goalscorer for several seasons - DCFC won't speculate in the way other clubs do. They hd the chance to buy Lambert before he went to Saints.

What can we expect tactically?
See above. There was a more fluid approach recently, mainly in away games, that brought some great early season results, but without this verve or a Plan B at home, we still struggled.

Very strange that we were crap away last season, quite good at home - but things have reversed somewhat this season.

Will he make substitutions early when needed or are you left screaming at him to make changes with ten minutes remaining?

Clough's use of substitutes was lamentable. In games we were losing or struggling to keep hold of, it would often be 85 minutes before some poor soul was pushed into action. In one or two games, defenders replaced forwards when we were winning - our threat evaporated and the Rams surrendered a few points when the pressure forced goals against (often also from poor defending).

Did he have favourites who you couldn`t understand how they were still in the team?

Sometimes, but he also singled players out in public that made mistakes and then left them out, Tomas Cwyka is the best example - good young striker, got rid after he dared to make a mistake in midfield in one game, giving the ball away. The defenders didn't react, we lost a goal & points.

Were you disappointed to see him leave Derby at the time of his dismissal?

Things needed to change, maybe he'd taken Derby as far as he & his backroom staff could. Scouting was very weak. The timing of his dismissal was very crass and for many fans also unjustified at this early stage of the season.

Describe Clough in three words

Honest Committed Stubborn ( much like his Dad).

Nigel did a magnificent job in sorting out the almighty mess left by Billy Davies and then his predecessor Paul Jewell. Just keeping Derby above relegation whilst turning over all the staff was an achievement.

We'll never know if he could have spent more money than he was given on better players that could seriously challenge for promotion, or whether his own coaching team and scouting network could help him achieve that (quite a few fans doubt it).

If he didn't ask for more money for better players, my view is that he certainly should have done. Owners GSE are only now waking up to the fans' desire for real progress leading to promotion and the big-time; so many "smaller" clubs have left us way behind.

In case you wonder - I was supporting Derby before Brian Clough was appointed, so I've seen a few players, managers & Boards come & go!!

Maclaren Simmo & Steele have great pedigree and excellent contacts, and changes are already having an effect. Whether the team will achieve anything this season is debateable, but next season it really should be full steam ahead.
