 | Forum Thread | Thumbs up for Hawthorn at 16:05 26 Jun 2025
Went there as 1st pub of my ST renewal pub crawl. Only 1 ale - Oxford Gold but it was fine. Not the greatest selection of beers, but lovely scotch egg and chips. Nice atmosphere, quite full for lunchtime. Really good jazzy & bluesy music on sound system. Even a piano(!). I played a few things but an American bloke told me I was playing all the wrong notes. Rest of crawl - worst ever. Askew no ale, Andover closed,Thatched only duff Pride, Prisoner of War, 4 ales, all of which I had to take back. Hammersmith Belle, previous posters were correct, hell on earth. Spoons came to the rescue. |

That's correct. The retardation of ignition timing by 5% brings about valve overlap which leads to misfiring, increased fuel consumption, decreased performance and additional wear and tear on engine components. |

I'm OK with a French manager - y'know what they say “ one man's fish is another man's poisson” |

I'm going to renew my ST next week, so will try the Hawthorn. Anyone know if they've got ale ? I'll report on the scran. I always do a Bush pub crawl when I go over to renew. May be a bit too hot for much walking though. That's OK, more drinking time ! |

They were 'ard days…. I only had one shoe so had to hop six miles to work in the snow. |

Never liked them myself. They were introduced when people in employment only got Sundays and Xmas day off. If Xmas fell on a Sunday - tough. Now people get 4 to 7 weeks holiday. Time to scrap them and get the economy back on track. C'mon, brace up ! |

I'm thinking this one has been aired before but Ebenezer Morley, credited with the formulation of modern football, the FA etc, is buried just a few miles away from Loftus Rd in Barnes cemetary. |

I often saw some minor imperfections in his play. |

When my older brother did his National Service in the 50s, a lot more people went to church than is the case today. They used one of the huts as a “church” on Sundays. He didn't fancy it but quickly found those that didn't attend were put on Jankers. He decided to attend and on the first Sunday, he walked in only for the Sergeant to bellow: “Oi,take your f*ckin' cap orf in the 'ouse o' Gawd”. |

Thanks Clive. Speaking of the Telegraph, I wonder if, in your line of work , you ever met Michael Henderson, who was a sports writer for the Tele among others ? He used to drink Pride in the Andover Arms - nice bloke. Also an author, wrote a fine book aligning the demise of real cricket with the demise of society. |

I very much enjoyed the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli version of Pretty Vacant. |

Sometimes the most unlikely thing happens … I reckon he'll sign a new contract ! Today I saw a woman walking down Uxbridge rd and, ah no! You'll never believe it - she, well she, WASN'T looking at her phone ! |
