Never liked them myself. They were introduced when people in employment only got Sundays and Xmas day off. If Xmas fell on a Sunday - tough. Now people get 4 to 7 weeks holiday. Time to scrap them and get the economy back on track. C'mon, brace up ! |

I'm thinking this one has been aired before but Ebenezer Morley, credited with the formulation of modern football, the FA etc, is buried just a few miles away from Loftus Rd in Barnes cemetary. |

When my older brother did his National Service in the 50s, a lot more people went to church than is the case today. They used one of the huts as a “church” on Sundays. He didn't fancy it but quickly found those that didn't attend were put on Jankers. He decided to attend and on the first Sunday, he walked in only for the Sergeant to bellow: “Oi,take your f*ckin' cap orf in the 'ouse o' Gawd”. |

Thanks Clive. Speaking of the Telegraph, I wonder if, in your line of work , you ever met Michael Henderson, who was a sports writer for the Tele among others ? He used to drink Pride in the Andover Arms - nice bloke. Also an author, wrote a fine book aligning the demise of real cricket with the demise of society. |

I very much enjoyed the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli version of Pretty Vacant. |

Speaking of clubs owning houses in the adjacent streets, I was always told the Rs owned a lot of nearby houses which they used to house their young players. They would be worth a mint now. FFP, yer 'avin' a larf. |

I had an excellent meal on SAR concourse last week - breast of guinea fowl under glass, larks tongue in aspic and a very agreeable bottle of Chablis. |

I've always loved the songs made up by the soldiers in WWI. many featured in Oh What A Lovely War. For example : to the tune of Onward Christian Nourry, sorry Soldiers - we are Joe Soap's army, marching without fear, with our brave commanders seated at the rear. |

That's what I found - they said I must ready to come in to work immediately if told, otherwise the boot. You can't really have a drink at home as you may have to drive in if ordered. I got browned off after a while and jacked it in. Luckily, I got a great job after a week or so and stayed there for 12 years. Ps…the buggers didn't tell me I could go on holiday with prior permission. [Post edited 5 May 14:33]
