Thing is that someone like that needs marking.... he would occupy defenders and make gaps and opportunities for other players... and be handy if we were under pressure defending corners....and if he or someone like him can hold the ball up and let us get up the pitch more easily, it makes appoach play easier too.

£800k (10%) would buy us a couple of very decents forwards and pay their wages for 2 years, without affecting the budget....Or.. an excellent centre forward, a defensive midfielder and a six foot six centre half...

Seems like some Watford fans think £8m is a low-ball offer for Baah who is contracted to Watford until 2029... The Watford owner is selling sister club Udinese to some Americans for £150m so there is little cash-pressure to sell Baah at the moment...will Palace step up their offer if in fact they have actually submitted one...? Time will tell, but he does suit Glastner's style, big lads, pace and a trick or two....

Seems like Carlisle have quickly figured out that you can escape the National League if you can score enough goals.... I wonder if McN has had the memo? Building a team around a couple of prolific strikers seems like a better plan than building a team without a prolific striker and then trying to find one that fits in...

Election of new Trust main board director
at 19:16 28 May 2025

This has bèen a interesting discussion delving into the purpose of the trust and making comparisons with other trusts, but.. we are now in a very different place as a club with benevolent owners who, whilst not committing stupid money have a plan to finance the football aspect by creating sustainable income stream and similtaneously developing the Community Trust into a local powerhouse for civic improvement. They are enormously dominant owners in terms of shareholdings and the former large Trust shareholding is now vastly reduced, this is a whole new reality for supporters at large and the Supporters Trust.
I think the Trust has to now find a new raison d'etre, I could see it being a third element in the mix between the Community Trust and the Football club, perhaps with a funding and manpower remit putting money into things like helping with travel costs for promising youngsters, and having an active register of skills that might be used to develop new aspects of supporter interactions with the club, I am thinking of things like workplace evangelists, particular skillsets like IT or AI or organising events that the club only has to provide space for, perhaps a regular Sunday car boot or farmers market or running an Ebay shop.
The days of being a voice in the Boardroom is probably over with the Ogdens in charge and a far more professional team running things, but there will be loads of things that will require a small financial contribution or an extrs pair of hands. Maybe thats where the focus needs to be going forwards.

Its definitely time to regionalise L2 and the National League into L2 North the L2 South... crowds would improve, long midweek trips would largely go away , and the cost of those long away trips would be eased. It might mean drawing a new line each season affecting midlands clubs but the nonsense of traipsing from Surrey to somewhere like Hartlepool in the same week would be avoided.... i doubt that spending long hours on buses between games does much for those hamstring injuries we seem prone to.

Centenary Game on Friday
at 11:35 20 May 2025

I used to stand, in the paddock in front of the main stand seem to remember that. My dad paid sixpence and about threepence for me I was about 7. I used to stand at the front right next to the pitch with my scarf and a wooden rattle. I used to love night matches that I was allowed to go to from being 9 or 10 and which kicked off at 7.30 on Wednesdays, so straight to bed when we got home...the best thing was checking out who was in the main stand, sometimes Bobby Charlton was in there watching his Uncle, Stan Milburn. Billy Bingham's brother was also a regular, Billy was Northern Ireland manager at the time. His Brother lived in Milnrow...which was also the home of Huddersfield player Chris Cattlin, who my Dad also knew, Chris and his Dad used to turn up at night matches occasionally, notably a day or two after being transferred to Coventry City in 1968, Coventry were a notable first Division side in those days. I asked Chris (a left back) how he intended to deal with George Best on Saturday.. he just said " watch match of the day" I did and in virtually the first minute, Cattlin nearly put Best into the stand with a huge sliding tackle that took out Best, the ball and a huge divot! Best had a "quiet" game....

Should he stay or should he go?

another thought I had was about it needing 3 seasons of relative success to boost crowds and set clubs on an upwards trajectory, so 2 more seasons to continue to improve the club all round seems a reasonable timescale. The more success the club has, particularly at home, the more gates will grow, the easier sponsorship deals become and the more cash comes in. Looking back, Notts County, Stockport and Wrexham had long-ish periods in this division, building the fan base, improving the squad and moving up the division, its a process not a one season wonder for most clubs, especially those that have dropped down to this level having been established lower league clubs , an opportunity to break with the past and rebuild for the future...and I think that's how we should see it, No doubt we could have done better this season with lady luck on our side, , that was opportunity scorned, perhaps, but the process continued and we are all-round better as a club right now than probably at any time this decade. with new owners starting to implement their vision and a higher calibre of staff to deliver it..
The despair has warn off somewhat now , I will get my season ticket next week and am ready to go again.. Its really all we can do. but if next season is better than this, we will surely be up where it counts....

Should he stay or should he go?
at 12:15 17 May 2025

Building teams over time has always been difficult at Rochdale simply because as soon as we have found a key defender or goalscoring forward they have been sold off or refused to sign new contracts and moved away. The resulting money was put into the " running expenses" pot and not reinvested in the team. Hopefully things will change now that we have the Ogdens in charge with their moves to make the club sustainable from off pitch activities.
I left the ground on Thursday shaking my head at throwing away a huge opportunity, but in the cold light of Friday morning came to the conclusion that, in the round , it had been a much better season than any since pre-covid days and at least the club was back in a position to attract better players and keep them.
We are attempting to overcome a century of dismal football interspaced with the occasional good season, its going to take time and there will be bumps in the road, but " continuous improvement" has to be the plan.
McNulty has to retain the younger talent and will need to replace some of the senior players, its a critical close season for him. He needs to figure out how he will win more games and score more goals, the essential elements of the game. I doubt he will execute a whole new plan but we do need more height, power and athleticism front and back, more like Crystal Palace than Man City, Bird proved that..... Conceding 3 headers on Thursday was just poor and needed fixing earlier when their tactic of throwing everything into our 6 yard box became so obvious so he needs to be prepared to change earlier in the game and not wait until 70mins as per usual.
And then there is McNulty himself, and how much help he gets, does he have a mentor? Are there people he can talk to outside the club who add perspective? Does he have time to read or visit other clubs? Because he should.....

TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Southend United (Playoffs)
at 09:00 16 May 2025

Gilmour and Mitchell on the back post....and up against the biggest player on their team...WTF.. Mitchell has the heart of a sparrow and didn't get off the grass and Gilmour just got bullied. Southend knew we couldnt cope with the ball being fired into the 6 yard box and just kept doing it...there is a serious weakness at the heart of this squad when they are put under pressure , the lack of belief that they have what it takes, manifested by finishing top of the fair play league for the second successive season.. this is professional sport, its what they have chosen to do, they are not a collection of butchers and bakers with proper jobs to go to on Monday morning. I fear the " head coach" has assembled a team with decent skills but which lacks that " edge" that marks the difference between true winners and the guys who come second. To be fair its probably why they are playing for Rochdale, but if managed by someone who truely believes and is capable of transmitting that belief into his players anything is possible...if he cant you will always come second, third or fourth.
The next round of recruitment will be critical, do we trust McNulty to improve this squad? I am not sure I do.

TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Southend United (Playoffs)
at 23:45 15 May 2025

Good teams don't get to 3-1 up in big games and lose.. but as soon as the changes were made, we lost impetus and handed it to Southend... its the fatal flaw in the McNulty make-up. He has the uncanny ability of making the wrong decision at exactly the wrong time, his alarm goes off after about 65 minutes and the game goes out of the window, Its probably a complete section in a FIFA coaching manual somewhere but surely he must see what everyone else sees, Barlow was central to much of the good stuff we played and without him and Bird to worry them they just threw the kitchen sink at us....keep the winners winning is a very basic sports concept that McNulty doesnt seem to understand, maybe because he has never been a winner himself...always the bridesmaid, never the bride....2 key games where we have gone in front and lost at home in front of 5000+... so very disappointing , so very inevitable, so easily avoidable....

Paisley was in the 73rd Medium Anti Tank Regiment
https://ra39-45.co.uk/units/medium-regiments/73-medium-regiment-ra

The 73rd were in Egypt attached to the 8th Armoured Div. renamed the 95th anti tank Regiment in Sept 1941 and back to the 73rd in April 1944 and Ended the war in Italy as the 315 Battery but it was the 7th Armoured Div. that became known as "The Desert Rats" because they had a Jerboa as their emblem whilst in North Africa, "

"The Jerboa became the emblem of the 7th Armoured Division after General Creagh saw one at the Cairo Zoo and had a design created.
The design was originally flown as a pennant from Major General Creagh's vehicle.
The Jerboa was chosen to represent the division's work in the North African desert campaign. "
The 73rd Medium Regiment was raised in Tarporley Cheshire in 1940 and disbanded in September 1945 having spent part of WW2 in XXX Corps under Montgomery, they went from Egypt to Italy whilst the the rest of the 8th Armoured Div. returned to the UK to re-arm and retrain ready for D Day. In Italy the 73rd Anti Tank Regiment was redesignated to become 315 Battery as part of the 67th Regiment (after being the 95th for a short while too) and account of their arrival in Italy is here .. https://57th67thanti-tank.co.uk/welcome-315-s-p-battery/

Paisley would have been watching from afar in Italy as the rest of their former 8th Armoured colleagues were busy Landing on Gold Beach as part of XXX corps and on to Arnhem , crossing the Rhine and the Battle of the Bulge....

I'm sorry.. have I touched a nerve? Bad day at the office? Bank holiday hangover? You seems to enjoy jumping onto my posts, is it some sort of imagined power thing? I would have replied earlier but it was tea time ...

You probably won't remember the Rochdale Sculptors? Or the edgy Art exhibitions of the 70's and early 80's, or the Walter Kershaw murals in the early 70's? And why are there no Rochdale-born Glynn Boyd Harte works? He was a contemporaŕy of SPO at RGSB..?

Rochdale was thriving, innovative, busy and bustling. 50 years and half a lifetime later, its frightened of its own shadow, frightened to offend, frightened of real innovation.... "The last two shopping centres didnt work, lets build another one"
..Famous for what was, and now a National by-word for being somewhere no one wants to move to, especially businesses needing a workforce other than for warehouses close to the M62 on the way to somewhere else...its all gone so well...

Life under the Greater Manchester umbrella has stifled towns like Rochdale, the CEO at the opening of the Toad Lane Pioneers Museum extention said to me that "the best thing for Rochdale wa5s for it to become a dormitory town for Greater Manchester" such was his ambition and hence the millions spent on trams going the long way to Manchester...
Those of us who remember the buzz of the 60s and 70s are grateful we were there to experience it, the Rochdale of today is an homogenised, pale imitation. You probably like it .. some of us are not too keen on bland. Still, they did a good job with the Town Hall, a monument to the past, its just a shame there will be nothing from 2025 needing the same treatment in 2125....
