Still seems nervous to me
at 17:40 1 Jul 2025

You know when you write something, post it and wish you hadn't and wish you could delete it and pretend you never did write it - this is one of those moments.

I perhaps did not convey myself that well though I cannot see anywhere where I have suggested anything negative about our new manager. I have no view on him at all. I don't know him and I have no reason to believe he won't be successful (whatever success looks like). I hope he is the best thing since sliced bread. I want success, I want him to do well and for us to have a great season - we have had too much dross and too many changes in recent seasons both at manager and player level.

As regards the make up of the league - yes, there is a real mix but it is not an easy league and I was just trying to convey that we cannot afford to be arrogant and assume we can walk it - but we may!

I am looking forward to the season, going to games again with a sense that we can compete and win games.

Still seems nervous to me
at 10:51 1 Jul 2025

I, for one, is not expecting promotion saintmark1976. My expectations are around between 8-12th in the finish. It has nothing to do with the appointment of Will Still as we cannot comment on his ability until we have seen it and I am willing to give him a chance (no pun intended). My reasons for being very conservative about success this year (depending on how you recognise success):-

1. I think it will be a difficult league with many challengers and I think the points will be more evenly distributed quite widely;
2. I think having some experienced players recruited is essential and whilst I believe in youth and looking to the future with prospects we were usually better when we bought in players that have that bit of gravitas and presence in key positions and in games which could be difficult or need to be managed. We just don't have any natural leaders on the pitch - at least none that I have noticed for a long time. McMenemy was a master of mixing youth and experience (admittedly a different era);
3. We traditionally start seasons slowly even when we are doing well. I am not convinced will be ready enough for the start despite the earlyish appt of Still. It will take time for the team to bed in and for Still to know his best side. Arguably that is the same for other clubs - or some other clubs.

I am not being defeatist or negative as I think it will be an exciting entertaining season and I am looking forward to it. Surely it can't be as bad or as depressing as last season???? I am just managing my own expectations. Also, it is no good us being arrogant as a club just because we have been in the PL and believe we have some eternal right to success at this level. Many will see us as one of their cup finals and will up their game against former PL clubs. If we are not prepared to fight and scrap at times then we may live to regret it.

Anyway, that is my take. I am sure many of you will disagree or can argue against it, as is your want.

I would tend to agree. Get on with the sale, get the money and use it for getting a new keeper etc in.

As far as I am concerned I just want us to sign the best and most competent players we can for the job that we need them to do. Which previous clubs they have played for (even if it is local rivals) is largely immaterial to me. Most players (there are some exceptions of course) just see playing for a club as part of the job or career and do not necessarily have an affiliation with them as a lifelong commitment.

Wherever KWP goes I will metaphorically wish him all the best and as far as I am concerned he will always be welcome back to St Marys and I hope he will always receive a warm reception. I think his attitude has been exemplary. His professionalism has never been in doubt. I appreciate that should be the expected norm but in truth, all too often it isn't with quite a few players.

But (and maybe I am being thick here - quite possible), why are we not seeking for him to remain? Has he said he will not play again at Championship level? Is there known interest from elsewhere? Has there been a discussion to see if he would like to stay? Do we not wish to entertain retaining him because of his wages? I know his contract has expired or soon to be and is relatively free to do whatever he likes and I will wish him well whatever that may be but has the club just given up on keeping him?

My memories of him is that he was a pretty good and consistent referee irrespective of the club or player.

Complete agree. He has been excellent for us even through the most torrid time. He hasn't always got it right but he has always given his all and been a complete professional throughout. If he leaves he would leave with me wishing him the very best as he deserves it. I know some will say he gets paid well to be a model professional - true - but there are an awful lot of players who are not model professionals and in that respect he has stood out.

Will Still taking a job in England……
at 22:31 20 May 2025

I tend to agree with you here Cocklebreath.

I do not know anything about Will Still. I knew little about Russell Martin, even less about Juric. McMenemy when he joined us did not come jangling with football medals but for me he was the best thing that ever happened to the club.

Whether Still is appointed or whoever it may be i just hope whoever it is can start to turn this mess around on the pitch. But, we need to be realistic - it is a mess on and off the pitch and it won't be just a case of getting the right manager. There are a whole host of other things that need to be sorted as well. It will be good to get the person in place though from the close of this season at the end of this weekend so they can start the huge amount of work they will have ahead of them to get some sort of team ready for the start of this next season.

I agree.

I think some people's judgements are clouded by the back to the wall approach to Man City, but we were abject against a very poor Leicester team and too many players did not put the effort in.

It always makes me ask the question: do we have a bunch of players who are only willing to put the effort in when they face one of the bigger teams? (not just an issue this season but I saw it under Ralph and managers before and since). If they put in the same effort and commitment against teams around us we would have had more points (I still think we were destined to be relegated). Our fighting or do or die spirit has been largely conspicuous by its absence this season with an appalling attitude by some players and I am certainly not fooled by a spirited display against Man C or earlier in our defeat at Liverpool.

Next Manager Odds
at 13:23 8 May 2025

I hope the owners have by now identified and all but have in place who the next manager is and is just a case of waiting for the last game of the season to end and for that person to take up appointment from day 1 of the end of the season. It is not like we have not known our destiny for ages. I hope they have a good idea of who is to be retained and let go and have a clear plan of the close season - which is not long and are ready to move and we do not stumble through June, July and into August and beyond with alot of if's, but's and maybe's.

I cannot think of a time........
at 17:07 3 May 2025

in my lifetime of supporting my club (I am well into my 60s) where such an abject set of players have represented it. This isn't just about a lack of skill or ability this is a group of players that have consistently throughout this season just not shown up - no bottle, no fight, no desire, no passion, nothing..........absolutely nothing and god help us if they represent us next year against the likes of Pompey etc, because I really don't think they get it or care one iota about the club or the fans or the city.

There is such a rebuilding job needed in the club on and off the pitch it is going take a monumental task to turn it around, if indeed it is not too late to do so.

Soul for sale or already gone?
at 13:37 30 Apr 2025

I want an owner or owners that are competent and know what they are doing, have a vision and a plan and whilst anyone can make an error they don't keep repeating the same errors.

I want a manager that understand the league, can adapt style etc to the situation, game, can create a winning attitude and has a passion for the club and team they are managing.

I want a set of players who really want to play for the club, play from the first to the final whistle of each game, can do the job that is expected of them and has a winning and never say die attitude to every game - accepting of course we can't win every game.

Is all of that too much to ask?

Southampton V Fulham The Verdict

Who should we blame Nick in what has been without question probably the worst season in the clubs history on and off the pitch? It sure as hell isn't the fans fault. If you had to assess this season and even the seasons before this, what reasons would you (and others) say have lead us to be where we are today?

Effectively it is what Cortese did. He realised that as good as Adkins was and much loved to get us to the next level it needed a different type of manager. The record of managers promoting clubs to the PL is not good in recent years.

The next managerial appointment and what we do in the close season in terms of transfers (departures and acquisitions) will be a big statement of where this club is going to go. This is an opportunity to end our decline and start turning the ship around. On the otherhand, get this wrong, this time and I fear our decline will continue next season and beyond. SR have no errors left in the bank - they have made too many costly mistakes on and off the pitch when it comes to managerial and player appointments.

They still managed to beat us though! That day at OT when we were so close to a unique result and we won't have had a better opportunity to have beaten them and then blew it..

The PL is very poor generally this year. Which makes us look even more woeful as we have been very poor in a poor league.

Can we sack Juric now please Mr Spors
at 10:16 16 Mar 2025

I have been through every manager since Lawrie McMenemy and we have had some bad ones in all that time and the most noticeable that comes to mind are Branfoot, Pellegrino, Jones, etc but I am struggling to think that they have been or were any worse than this current manager.

Since Juric was appointed he has done and achieved absolutely zero. Yes, it was always going to be a hard task to turn things around and just about everyone accepted relegation almost as soon as the season started, but Juric has been an absolute disaster. He has even managed to destroy what tenuous team spirit there was. None of the players seem to know what they are doing from one game to the next. None of them appear motivated and even those that do make some effort are often hooked off or don't get to play the next game.

Can someone anywhere give one thing that Juric has changed or improved since RM departed. It is embarrassing as a club that we cannot even manage to get to double figures on points let alone exceed Derby County's 11 points and we cannot even achieve it when we play sides that arguably not that great - Wolves yesterday - they were nothing special at all and yet we conspired to lose it.

This has been without doubt the worst season in my lifetime, even worse than the administration period. It is going to take something monumental to change the fortunes of the club around.

We’ll win again
at 19:10 23 Feb 2025

It would be the most entertaining and funniest thing to happen at a home game for a long time to sing this.

We'll win again, don't know where, don't know when
but I know we'll win again some sunny day.

We've got a defence with big holes
some forwards n' no goals
and a midfield that goesssss astray,
the hope that we had
has faded away
but the fans still don't stay away,

We'll win again.................

I said it against Burnley, but the players have given up. We should all give up now until next season and just stay away. There is nothing more worth saying. We are not even a shadow of what we were once, we are dead as a club at the moment.
