The positives today
at 12:04 22 Sep 2024

Good to see someone focussing on the positives for once and I agree there were many yesterday. Could I also point out that we were supposedly in for Clarke, Delap and Smodics. I wouldn’t want any of them based on yesterday. Ipswich also wanted THB and Downes. Add in the performance of their new centre backs and Fernandez, Taylor and Sugawara and I think we have had a much better transfer window and spent less.

Looks like he is going to West Ham. BTW you can add Sergio Ramos, Willian, Perisic, Martial, Depay & Balotelli to the list of available free agents. Fancy any of them?

Now what?
at 10:40 31 Aug 2024

Looks like we now have a 33 man squad including Sicknote & Tall Paul and a pretty bloated wage bill. None of the incoming would have been cheap wage wise. We will need to offload several of Tall Paul, ABK, Manning, Edozie, Wood, Edwards, Larios, Sulemenia. Can we still loan out into Championship and how many transfer markets are still open?

Tom Fellows
at 16:30 27 Aug 2024

I see we are being linked with a late bid for Tom Fellows from WBA for £10m. I have to say I think he would be worth a punt. He played really well against us last season, particularly in the playoffs. He is very tricky and unlike most of our current wide players seems to have an end product.

Most important 5 days of the season
at 16:42 26 Aug 2024

They also broke every financial rule in the book and stayed up with 32 points. If we don't sell 2 of Alcaraz, ABK, Tall Paul and KWP it is highly unlikely we will sign anyone over £10m. Still paying the price for 2 disastrous windows. Meant we had to loan our way out of the Championship and then splurge £40m of the promotion premium on TBH and Downes. Our only hope is that there are quite a few other poor sides who rely on 1 or 2 key players i.e. Wolves, Palace, Everton, Leicester. Injuries will play a big part this season.

On the subject of the mythical striker we are after who is proven at premier level, costs under £25m, doesn't want massive wages and is happy to come to the saints, exactly who are we talking about? We have to be realistic and try to be a bit imaginative. if you look at last season's leading premier scorers and just concentrate on those we might have signed in the past you get Watkins, Solanke, Bowen, Mateta, Wood, Hee-Chan and Wissa. On the basis we will not be getting any of those who else would anyone suggest? I would try for Summerville.

What have learned from the Euros so far?
at 17:02 24 Jun 2024

1. Che Adams is one stair short of the landing in terms of being top drawer.
2. Janny B is just about good enough for the Premiership - but only just.
3. Jose Fonte is an insightful summariser / commentator but will he be a good coach?
4. A lot of ex-Saints still play international football
5. There aren't many good goalies around

Any additions?

Man City are very likely to sell Delap. Given the teleport from the Etihad to St Marys bound to be coming to us

We should be looking at Ampadou and Ritter at Leeds. Also Josh Cullen at Burnley, especially if we can’t get Downes

How about swapping McCarthy and some cash for Kelleher with Liverpool?

Very unlikely unfortunately. Ireola likes him and he is relatively cheap. They are also likely to lose a couple of players this summer.

Ref
at 15:20 18 May 2024

I totally recognise that the ref cannot be expected to be right up with play but the guy last night barely left the centre circle. The incorrect decisions he made, both for and against us, were largely taken from 30 yards away and from a straight on angle, where he simply cannot see things. The lineos should pick up some of them but impossible if it is on the other side of the pitch.

5 Things About West Brom
at 13:32 13 May 2024

Regarding the away support and whether it was loud or not don't forget that Sky have started scrimping on the number of microphones they have around the ground and have always had the ability to turn up and down the volume from various parts of the ground.

What has happened to the Defence?
at 09:15 10 Mar 2024

Don’t really agree with any of the above. RM.has tweaked the system in response to injuries and probably to get more goals. Most teams do not commit many forward as against us so we rarely need four at the back. He plays 3 CBs and pushes 1 high. That is usually Jack S who unfortunately is not John Stones. It means when we lose the ball nobody really knows where they should be. IMO we need to go back to a classic back four.

Like most possession based teams he also tells the FBs to tuck in securing the middle and inviting oppo to go wide. Most of the goals we concede are from players cutting in and shooting or cutbacks from wide to a player coming late to the box. To counter that defence and midfield need to close down much quicker. Baz is not perfect but his distribution is generally very good and I doubt any of the other keepers mentioned would do any better in our system

The penalty and VAR
at 08:58 10 Mar 2024

Still not sure about the penalty yesterday and why it stood unless they did not see the double touch. I was surprised they replayed it on the big screens while the officials were debating since they could have looked at it despite no VAR.

We certainly did win 2-1 with a Danny Ings winner. Singing "Stick the 9-0 up your ar%e" at the end with my teenage daughter still remains one of the highlights of my away travel, particularly after they showed the highlights of the 9-0 just before kick-off
