You break it down by stretching the defence with pace and incisive passing. Chair, Saito, Dembele, Poku and Smyth are built for just that. |

Pace in a defender is a great attribute to have, but Cook has never had it and relies more on positional awareness and reading of the game, which he has always been good at. Anything can happen when you sling crosses into the box filled with 8 or 9 players. Nardi simply isn’t big enough or strong enough to command his six yard box and is clearly uncomfortable coming for the high balls in a packed box. More telling for me are the comments around (ball) control and intensity. Our ball control is generally poor and we really need to work on picking up the pace of the transitions. Difficult if you can’t get the ball under immediate control and look to progress the ball. |

If we are more “efficient”, this should be a comfortable win. Creating opportunities isn’t the problem, finishing them is and we are still prone to absolute gaffes at the back. 1-2 is my prediction. |

And when Poku returns? Has JS not intimated that Chair has been earmarked for a central position? Whoever is playing and in whatever position, if we are flexible about the formation it will hopefully make it difficult for the oppo to set up against us. A riches of attacking options. Bonkers. |

The ability was always there, but he looked terrified of the pace and aggression of the championship when he first arrived. Starting to acclimatise. The thing I like about him is that he looks up and scans with the ball at his feet. He doesn’t rush and is comfortable playing short balls or dinking one over the top of the opposition defence. Great range of passing ability. The lad has a high ceiling, but he has to produce on a regular basis. Like many, delighted he has made me eat humble pie. Now our best ball playing, even cultured, midfielder. |

Chair was class last night and always has been. The game was incredibly frustrating for long periods, largely due to several players inability to trap a ball, play simple passes and make the right decision. Chair made it look effortless and along with this strange metamorphosed Madsen fella, will bring some much needed nous and control to our play. Welcome back Ilias. |

Kone’s ball retention was awful tonight. Chair made a huge difference when he came on. Still a class above any of the new boys. Control, movement, crisp, sharp passing. Chair playing as the 10 in front of Madsen will make us tick far better. Question is, where does Burrell play, especially when Poku is fit. |

Kone was clearly getting frustrated on Saturday. Hope he shares those frustrations with his manager. |

Bring him on (for Madsen) to shut up shop and protect a lead. Nobody better than him for that role. Progressive play is not his bag, as he simply doesn’t bring enough to the party if we need a goal, although Varane isn’t pulling up any trees either. |

We will not get a better opportunity to reach the play offs than this season. The three relegated teams are no great shakes, only Coventry look like a sure thing and we have the best squad since Warnock. JS needs to get a grip of this team and show some bravery. The Frey experiment needs to be assigned to the trash bin and we need to be going all out for two wholly winnable games. Swansea and Derby are there for the taking. No pussy footing around, go at them both with everything we have got. A great opportunity has presented itself this season, the stars have aligned. Let’s get this done. |

Work in progress = Inconsistency. Until the WIP nears the finished article, we will remain frustratingly inconsistent and continue to lose games that we are more than capable of winning. The teams that make the top six are the ones that remain more consistent throughout the season than the rest. We are not one of them……yet. |

Fair play FB. Wasn’t aware that Hayden had played for Jamaica mid week. |
 | Forum Reply | The Harvey Vale Conundrum at 10:02 19 Oct 2025
I thought the same about his crossing yesterday, but on reflection, slinging crosses into that Millwall defence was never likely to achieve anything. They win literally everything in the air. They are strong at the back and have some pace upfront. They will be a tough nut to crack this season. We only really got at them when the subs came on, despite dominating possession in the first half. We are still a work in progress, but when we eventually settle down and thinks start to click, I am excited at what we can achieve in this league. Still hugely optimistic. Vale is a good prospect. No doubt he will be a great signing, but will not likely see the very best of him until next season. |
 | Forum Reply | Madsen and Varane at 09:47 19 Oct 2025
He left it for Cook and Nardi to sort. Cook assumed Nardi was coming for it, but the ball dropped on the edge of the box so Nardi hesitated, allowing the striker to take control. RND should have done better with the second goal to be fair. Two soft goals, which continues to be our undoing in games that we control. |
 | Forum Reply | Madsen and Varane at 09:37 19 Oct 2025
I’m just not seeing it with Varane to be honest. Dispossessed regularly, plays the ball backwards just as much as Field does and doesn’t contribute much going forward. Madsen does a least get his head up and look to progress the ball forward. Varane does have potential, but has not started the season in the way I had hoped. Surprised Hayden didn’t start yesterday, his experience and nous against a belligerent Millwall side would have been ideal. Having said that, I don’t think he was the main issue yesterday. The inclusion of Frey was clearly used as an attempt to counter their strength and height at the back, but we slung crosss after cross in and won nothing in the air. Still, it was a smash and grab by Millwall and they executed their game plan to perfection. We move on with two very winnable games coming up. Stephans’ “efficiency” now replacing Warburtons’ “clinical” as the buzzword for failing to score when on top. |

Mbengue has a bit of pace and is comfortable running with the ball through the press. Makes a massive difference and opens up the midfield. Not enough pace with Kone and Frey up front in a 2. Frey can barely run. Vale got absolutely no joy crossing from the right, didn’t find a Rangers player once, but crossing into the box against Wall is never likely to achieve much. Playing through the lines at pace and on the deck should have been the strategy and we only saw glimpses of that when the subs came on. Too little too late unfortunately. RND I thought was solid. |
 | Forum Reply | Kone - too slow to go? at 21:04 7 Oct 2025
Don’t recall our Chaz being especially quick, but like Kone, was quite adept at tearing the onion bag off the frame of the goal. When Kone hits it, it stays hit. That will do for me. |
