Brian Moore mentioning before the game our 5 (FIVE) players in the England squad; Gerry, Stan, Ian, Phil & Dave. |

Don't wish to be pedant of the year but the Coventry game was his full debut as a starting player. He'd made half a dozen appearances earlier that season as substitute, his actual first time wearing the hoops was at home against the SW6 pikies at LR in November 1978. [Post edited 15 Aug 12:45]

I don't think that's the case. The European place would go to the next team not in Europe in the Premier League table. The League Cup winners also go into the Conference League and not the Europa League like the FA Cup winners. It's similar to how we got into Europe after the 1983-84 season by finishing 5th which normally wouldn't have qualified us (only 2nd 3rd and 4th in the league) but did in our case. Liverpool won the league and the league cup so their European place for winning the league cup went to us in 5th. |

The League Cup even in it's 70s/80s heyday was ALWAYS third in line of importance behind the 1st division and FA Cup. If you asked the likes of Clough/Paisley/Kendall et al back then, all would say the same with all saying the Football League championship was the number one priority. |

Agreed. Cooper should have been number two last season and Walsh should have been on loan at Stevenage. |

Unless you were Liverpool and then it was all over the shop: 4 - Centre Back (Thompson) 5 - Centre Midfielder (Cormack, Kennedy) 7 - 'Little' CF (Keegan, Dalglish) 8 - Holding Mid (Case, Lee) 9 - Winger (Heighway) 10 - 'Big' CF (Toshack, Johnson) 11 - Winger/Attacking/Def Mid (Callaghan, McDermott, Souness) |

Did anyone see the edition the other week? Luton v Fulham was the main match (Luton won 1-0) and afterwards a clearly pretty angry Alec Stock was interviewed by Brian Moore. Now I know it's probably quite well known that dear, departed Alec was the inspiration for Paul Whitehouse's 'Ron Manager' Fast Show character but I think this interview was probably what Paul Whitehouse watched as it had quite a few 'hmms' and even an 'isn't it?' in it. |

Yep. 22 wides over the two innings is unforgiveable at international level really. India bowled half that number over the two innings. In fact in total England gave away 47 runs in wides and byes, India just 19. [Post edited 4 Aug 15:17]
