 | News Comment | Why Johannes Spors Went For Will Still Over Danny Rohl at 17:55:39
Can’t argue with any of that Nick, just about spot on. I’m genuinely quite surprised by this appointment, I’ve followed his fortunes since he took over at Reims when they were being fined 22k a match because he didn’t have the badges.. Very happy with Still, not sure we could have got anyone better. It’s all about the player recruitment now, everything else is in place. |
 | News Comment | Will Still Appointed As Southampton Manager at 10:13:13
Highly rated and respected in France, he has a plan and he’s adaptable. Talks about setting up based on the opposition which shows he has tactical nous and an understanding of what is required to win each game. I’m not worried about his age or lack of experience in England, look at Hurzeler at Brighton, never managed in England or the top flight in Germany. I think we have made an excellent appointment but the real game changer, one way or another, will be the recruitment. This is the key to Still’s success or failure, which players stay, which ones go and who we bring in. It is clear to me that good footballers who don’t have high energy or physicality will be no good for the top flight so we have to sign the right level of player and convince them it’s only 9 months and we’ll be back in the big time. The ambition and stubbornness of our board will determine this, we need to keep Fernandes and build the team around him, he’s under contract, as were Adams and KWP and without them, we wouldn’t have been promoted last year. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Linked With Two Out Of Contract Strikers at 16:44:39
Ditto IanRC.. Last time I saw Ings it looked like his legs had gone, the Championship has moved on as well as the Prem. I don’t think even the likes of Diaz or Armstrong are any better than mid table strikers now, certainly not possessing the potential to play in the Prem. I really can’t comment on Shankland as I haven’t seen him. But he obviously has experience and may be ideal for the Championship. That said, I only want us to buy fast, strong, hungry players who have good stamina, not 30-33 year olds on the way out. Why can teams beneath us sign better strikers than us year after year? |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Everton The Verdict at 17:48:03
The fans turned up but the team didn’t, probably because they had no interest in playing with 8 defenders again and having no pattern of attack. I don’t really see the point in Simon Rusk, ok he has steadied the ship very slightly but to be blunt, a league 2 team would have started with a striker if it was an FA cup match ffs.. It was obvious that to get anything out of the game, we needed at least one goal. Sulemana is actually lazy, it’s no excuse to say he’s not a centre forward, he could still have caused a nuisance. That said I do feel sorry for him that he was thrown under the bus by Rusk, fortunately it was parked.. his body language isn’t great and there’s no end product. Why on earth did he not start with Stewart up top? We travelled all that way, getting up at 3am, spending huge sums of money again and he puts out that side.. These people have clearly forgotten that this sport is about the fans. If Rusk isn’t up to the task and to make simple decisions then it is actually his fault, he should have told the owners that he doesn’t have the ingredients.. I’m totally disgusted by Sundays performance, decisions and lack of regard for what the fans have been through this year while they pick up their thousands.. Ramsdale and Fernandes aside, I’m disgusted, live on the breadline my only hobby following Saints and they don’t bother to show up. They are a disgrace. No Aribo isn’t good enough for the Championship, it took him 6 touches to get the ball under control on Sunday. Another who is too laid back like Smallbone, who actually did ok. I was more hectic nutters in the side like Matt, not these pipe smokers like McCarthy and the other strollers. I really pity you Nick for having to write about this garbage every week and to be fair, you’ve done incredibly well to stay balanced with your words. We do need to get this over with now asap and start again. |
 | News Comment | A Rough Guide To The Last Weekend Of Goodison Park at 15:43:41
Damn, there was me looking forward to walking to the ground waving my ticket in the air.. Unfortunately I’ve already decided to wear colours and why the hell not? Easy solution if you’re hassled, just tell them in a frustrated manner that you’ve got to queue up for an hour and collect them from the ticket office.. I’m more concerned if we win and ruin their day, getting back to the car after our youth have taunted them with you’ve seen Southampton, now go home, or words to that effect. I think we won the last game at Maine Road and last to win at White Hsrt Lane, am I correct? Was there another one too? |
 | News Comment | Johannes Spors Shakes Up Southampton Backroom Team at 17:02:37
Well we’ve all being crying out for a proper structure for recruitment and people still moan! I might have perhaps preferred the head of recruitment to come in before the others but maybe we have a plan that we can’t realise until the end of the season. I’m not sure why underweststand has to bring Trump into the discussion, what has that got to do with Saints? I wager that you haven’t a clue and just regurgitate the mantra of Jimmy Savile TV. Back to the topic, I hope we do have the head of recruitment lined up already because as you rightly say, this summer is vitally important for our future and we have to get things right. I can’t help feeling that we watch better players at other teams with lower budgets at times so it’s not about affordability when, for example , the likes of Fellowes and Diangana are at a club well below us in league position and wealth yet they are better than what we have. I put much of the blame at the hands of Jason Wilcox with us buying loads of Man City kids who won’t make the grade for them. Too many of them have not given us what we hoped for and the one who was special, Lavis, went in a flash. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Leicester City The Verdict at 11:52:57
Spot on. Disgraceful performance, worst of the season. We only have one left sided wing back at the club and he wasn’t in the squad. Manning was dreadful and he can’t play in that position as your wing backs need to be pivotal to the attack.. he has no idea what to do with the ball. The 3 centre backs have all proved that they aren’t good enough and this 5 at the back stupidity is why we are conceding the ground all over the park but Rusk can’t see it. So we can’t get out, have little outlet and some of the players are lazy, sick of the excuses from Rusk already. Fernandes did not look tired, Smallbone always looks tired. Sulemana didnt bother enough and we had no courage on the ball to play incisive passes. Football is so simple when you pass and move, we don’t move, this is down to the coaching and unfortunately Rusk is another out of his depth. The owners need to sell, they are clueless and are about to lose the fans, who were amazing on Saturday. Total and utter disgrace of a football club from top to bottom. |
 | News Comment | A Rough Guide To Leicester City at 16:59:46
Good to see a cheesy joke thrown in.. and agreed, the horn at the start is very backward. My memory of the one time I went to Filbert street was a 4-3 loss and they pelted us with coins. The girl sat behind me was hit in the face and was covered in blood.. the police saw who did it and just stood there and did nothing. I hate Leicester and glad they are relegated too. I would laugh for a year if Steptoe gets his comeuppance and breaks a toe, misses 6 months and can’t get a new contract.. nuts to him! |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Fulham The Verdict at 17:14:40
Part of the issue is we are playing a system with wing backs and we only had one on the pitch. Manning is the best left back for me but he is a woeful wing back as he has no pace and is only comfortable with the ball at his feet for a free kick. Why didn’t Welington play? We looked more of a threat at West Ham when he came on. If 4 at the back ok, Manning. Also we all knew that Traore would roast him but KWP has the pace, so at half time he should have swapped. Going 6 at the back is what Potter did last week, went defensive and we equalised after dominating.. It only works to shore up the midfield to protect the back and we weakened it taking off Matty but it was his fault for the equaliser, lost his man ball watching. I was very encouraged by Ross Stewart, his footballing body language suggests a fit version of him can be huge for us next year. I still think Leicester is an easier challenge than Fulham. If we play like we did at West Ham, we will get something out of it. Sulemana is due a game where his end product counts for something. I saw leadership until the end but they are a young side so individual errors and bad communication will happen when knackered. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Fulham The Preview at 17:12:50
Agree underweststand with all that except I want more than 1 point so we’re not 2nd worst either. I also put very little blame at the feet of Juric despite how odd some of his decisions were. Never have managers that we think do all the right things. Juric played Les much more which helped and had the squad stripped and given no help! Don’t understand why you keep digging at him like it’s mostly his fault. The club are more than 60% of the blame and the majority of the rest is Martin’s for me for his arrogant stubbornness with his ideology which basically gave us no chance when it was obvious the year before and to all pundits this year that he would destroy us with such stupidity of 100% possession. Van Dijk knows when you need to find row Z but our defenders weren’t allowed to. This is why we have f all points and the squad has such low confidence. Juric was on a hiding to nothing and had no English experience, not his fault. We looked more dangerous when we went 4 at the back last week and dominated play. I agree with Archer in for TP tomorrow but I’d also like to see Welington in for Manning who has been great as a left back at times but has no real threat going forward. I don’t think this is our best chance, I think they’re much better on the road than Leicester are anywhere.. I do like Simon Rusk and hope that he is involved in the next official management set up, I would consider giving him a go but he hasn’t really shown his hand in respect of what style he prefers to play, Spors wants a high pressing manager who is adaptable to all conditions. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At West Ham United The Preview at 07:01:50
Of course you would drop the captain, despite us being more solid with him on the pitch.. the problem, as you say is our lack of potency up front and this is due to recruitment. Armstrong is never going to be good enough for the Prem and now the Championship is passing him by as he doesn’t even start for W Brom! Scored 1 penalty since Jan? Same with Diaz, was on the bench yesterday.. clueless recruitment has got us where we are today and we missed the red flags, blinded by the Wembley success in the playoffs. |
 | News Comment | Manchester United, West Ham And Leeds Circling Over Southampton at 16:44:12
Does anyone still believe these paper stories? They all need several articles each day as click bait and it tends to work.. Rambo is obviously going to go, the other 3 are league 1 standard and we won’t be promoted if any of them are between the sticks. After McCarthy turning into a PlayStation keeper against Liverpool, I don’t see why we don’t move him on as well. Bazunu was nowhere near top level and part of the reason we ended 4th instead of 2nd. The club have to get this summer right with personnel in and out and that includes keeping Fernandes and Dibling. There is no point otherwise, considering we will bring in enough for other players to stay afloat and competitive. |
 | News Comment | Can This Be The Dawning Of A New Era At Southampton FC at 17:31:56
I agree with Ali, Martin got lucky with his style in the Championship and finished 4th with the 2nd best squad. It was obvious to all pundits and fans pre season that Martin would have to adapt if he wanted to survive and he stubbornly ruined us as the players were scared to find row z when in game management. Juric didn’t have the players. Selles out of his depth and no experience and Jones again had the wrong players for his style and also out of his depth, so Spors needs to get this next appointment right and the club have to be prepared to pay a good wage to get the right man in. But I agree with Nick to an extent, we have someone with experience and connections in the game and it is a chance to start on a new Liebherr like journey if we get the recruitment right. We don’t need to sell everyone and can bring in good money for many of those we don’t want. Keep Fernandes and Dibling and tell them we need one more season from them to go back up. |
 | News Comment | Southampton FC Issue Ivan Juric Statement at 17:20:21
I actually really like him, perhaps the wrong man because he didn’t have the players to play his style which would have been an appropriate style to compete at the top level. There’s a lot I liked and stuff I didn’t like but that’s usually the way. He wasn’t given the chance to build his own team so it’s harsh to say he’s a poor manager. Our squad just isn’t good enough and to be blunt many of them have not put in the effort that the fans and their wage merit. A real lack of passion to wear the shirt and that hasn’t helped, you shouldn’t need a manager to tell you to show pride and passion. |
 | News Comment | The Odds Are Out On The Next Southampton Manager at 17:02:58
Yeah only the Birmingham mail starting the Gerrard click bait rumour for their advertisers.. I doubt Leroy Rosenior is in the reckoning but Liam Rosenior is. He and Rohly are my preferences, in that order. I think Rohl is most likely though, especially if the Owls chair makes more late payments.. breach of contract etc.. Don’t want Gerrard, not because he’s a Scouser, I just don’t think he’s got it as a manager. Please not a bottle job like Southgate, we need someone with courage and a history of winning something! |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Crystal Palace The Verdict at 19:44:59
Btw Dibling is just a nipper, he clearly has a bit to learn and really would benefit from a season in the Championship, not just saying that to keep him. He’s potentially a £80m player but he’s nowhere near that yet, we would gain more of a fee by keeping him for another year, despite the contract running down to 1 year. Keep him and Fernandes, we can win the Championship title. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Crystal Palace The Verdict at 19:38:28
Pretty good verdict. I would agree that the m27 accident had some say in the lower attendance. I agree that Jack should have got closer to his man for the goal but his first full game back.. No idea what THB was doing for the goal though, dreadful defending heading it straight to the crosser. So we were caught napping a bit. I thought Downes was actually motm, magnificent, brave, used the ball well. Fernandes his usual brilliant self and with Les, that is the best midfield 3 for me. My only criticism was how static we were at times, when we passed and moved we looked brilliant but other times you wondered what invitation they were waiting for to support a run, so we ended up turning round and going backwards. But this was a much better performance all round, we didn’t have holes all over the pitch like in recent months and for me the main reason for this was capt Jack. It isn’t a coincidence for me that, although he may have his shortfalls, we have had better, shape, organisation and balance when he’s been on the pitch so he brings something less obvious. All of our centre backs have been guilty of errors which make them look out of their depth in the Prem but they all have attributes which on their day are very useful. Fine, you can all mark me down for that but Jack does bring a togetherness and spirit which is vital. Juric and Martin see this and they are chalk n cheese. |
 | News Comment | Back To Reality For Saints On Wednesday But Sadly Nothing Has Changed at 16:29:52
Palace won’t be resting any players. Say what you want about Juric but he’s the second manager with a completely different style to go into games with no centre forward, so I would half expect Rusk and Lallana to do likewise. I don’t see them ridding of Juric before the middle of May as there’s no financial logic to it. If Juric stays on for next season then Solak will not be a popular figure. I suppose it’s down to Spors and he has worked with Rohl. I would like Rosenior if not Rohl. |
