Very good assessment of where we are this season so far. As to be expected I suspect that the narrative will become clearer once we are 8-10 games in. We should also get a feel for who the other play off contenders may be in what looks like being quite a tightly contested division. Lets hope that our strength in depth and class can shine through! Good if unspectacular performance against a tough Altringham team. On another day with another referee we could have had 3 or 4 goals. As stated Mani makes a huge difference and will bring out the best in other players. Good partnerships are starting to develop all over the pitch and we have genuine strength in depth. EEL's captaincy has been excellent so far this season and other leaders are emerging. Early days but other results (especially Boreham Wood) suggest that the division could be a bit tighter than envisaged. Gateshead on Wednesday will be a good barometer. UTD. |

Expectations will be top 4 with a play off final. Personally I think that we could be runners up probably to York. Not convinced that Carlisle or FGR will sustain a challenge for the title. With our squad we should get 10-12 points more than last season when we threw quite a few points away. The big question is how will BJ use the resources at his disposal and make the right tactical calls to kick on especially against the other promotion candidates. |
 | Forum Reply | Boreham Wood predictions for tomorrow. at 12:14 9 Aug 2025
With our squad we should be a different class to Boreham Wood who will be very physical and direct. Once we have settled expect a good performance with 3 points needed. Hope for 3-1 Dale with Mani D getting a brace. There is a big gulf between top and bottom of the NL this season and we need to take 6 points from all potential strugglers. |

Good signing which improves their squad with goals from midfield. |

I suspect that you are correct and that the issues raised in this thread will persist throughout the season, subject to results and performances. Personally I think that BJ has recruited well this summer and credit to him but the proof of the pudding will be how the new squad gels tactically in producing good attacking football. We appear to have good cover in most positions. - The GK position may be a masterstroke with two potential stars of the future already capped at under age level. -The midfield combination is intriguing and it remains to be seen where Petit and Mancini will feature. - Would like to see a young CH (regret Ferguson going) and hope to bring in a pacy winger on loan in due course. This leaves small matters such as our formation, style of play and tactics as well as substitutions etc. There is no doubt that this needs to improve against the better teams but our coaching staff has also improved. However I am very optimistic at this point and have a sneaking feeling that Mani may be the divisions top scorer. Most professional pundits (bookies) think that we will finish 4th. However I am not convinced that Carlisle will be runaway champions or that York will have such a good season again. There will also be a dark horse such as Southend or Scunthorpe in the mix? The Ogden family has backed the management well and it is time for them to step up to the mark with improved performances starting with a convincing win against Boreham Wood who are one of the favourites for relegation. Hope we have a great season! |

Good signing. 19 goals from midfield for a relegated team should help us. |

Don't understand this decision. Ferguson has been poorly treated and for a relatively young player shows potential. Doesn't send out a positive signal. He will be another who moves and does well for another club! |

Absolutely agree with so much of this post and add a few random thoughts on the back of other comments. Greig probably gets told what he can ask and BJ obviously reiterates the same PR rubbish mixed in with the current interpretation of the coaching manual. It is window dressing. One lasting image was Jack the kitman's face at the final whistle. He looks totally p*ssed of and like many of us older supporters is rueing anther chance at glory slipping through our hands and the memories of 1969 slowly fading. Regarding BJ good managers are born and not made and usually have key attributes such as respect, discipline and motivation as well as tactical prowess. It also helps to have tactical savvy, passion, a clear philosophy, method and Plan B. What would Ferguson, Clough or Shankly have said after last night? The squad would probably be reporting for training this morning. We have good footballers but some of them are too physically and mentally weak to win this league which is admittedly very difficult. looking at the clout of teams next season ( Carlisle, Morecambe, Scunthorpe) we could well finish eighth or below unless things change quickly. BJ will certainly be in charge at the start of next season but he has a partial squad re-build to do and important decisions to make. Other posters have already indicated that some players will need to move on (or be transferred), and we will need a goalkeeper, central defender, midfield general and centre forward at the very least. Our would be saviour Bird will not be here unfortunately and Rodney could easily be poached. Loanees need to be more carefully considered and need to add real quality like the Southend right winger who was man of the match last night. I'm sure that the Ogden family will be watching closely given the atmosphere last night and our ability to attract a gate of 5,000 for important games. the Southend fans contributed massively to this. Lets make every game important from day one next season! Finally I hope that we can find a role for Ian Henderson in some coaching/ managerial capacity if possible as he has a lot to offer in a more professional set up. UTD. |

Fair play to Southend Utd. Fighting spirit and never say die. They looked stronger and as iftey wanted it more. We looked toothless at the end. Time to re-group and plan for next season but it wont be any easier. |

Could and maybe should be 4-2 at HT. They look useful going forward but a bit shaky at the back. Hopper and Coker need to be rattled. Our attitude looks right but we can not be complacent. I agree we should not overplay at he back and need to be more direct to Bird and Rodney. |

Great fun. Well done Sheffdale a worthy winner! Thanks BDB for all your diligent work and making difficult parts of the season more enjoyable than otherwise would have been the case. |
