Clash of the cup titans – Preview
at 23:55:52

Francis: Definitely beat Spurs. I saw all 3 games and after the first 2 rounds of knocking out the holders and that huge win, we all thought it was the League Cup coming home. Ironically, the Plymouth game disaster occurred with us fielding a strong team, unlike today's ties.

I saw part of that 1973/74 Argyle cup run, as having won at top division Burnley, naturally they then won at Loftus Road. This after we had knocked out the holders Spurs and put 8 past Sheffield Wednesday!

Preston make their point as QPR run out of puff – Report
at 09:31:26

Thanks Clive for a very accurate excellent report. A similar game to the opener last season, only against a much poorer opposition.

Some positives in the team, with good debuts from Mbenge and Burrell. Esquerdinha a bit naive but has potential.

Sadly, Celar does not to seem to have learnt anything from last season, just peeling off from the shoulder chasing a pass that will never be delivered. However, an improved Madsen, which gives some hope of development there.

Again, piss balling at the back seems to be a theme to continue. I don't get it, taking risks just for the keeper to go long regardless (and lose possession regardless). What's the point?

As you said, a good first half (but nobody to finish the advantage) and they really ran out of puff in the second. A long old season ahead, I think.

Hopefully the return of Dunne and a forward (any forward) will help things. I count myself as one of the 21%!

Pre-season and Perpignan – Awaydays
at 19:52:53

Clive, absolutely superb read ... especially when reading this in France! Personally, I like the one way systems in small towns, which means that traffic mostly goes that way! Good to point on cementing relationships with the fans, after all it is us that support them when they are crap not Sky.

Whilst there are weak spots, it seems a shame that the Varane spot is in doubt. You would have thought a deal signing seals it all or was it just to get the get out clause?

Anyway, a fine start to your season. Thanks

Rangers read the room, finish on a high at Sunderland - Report
at 00:21:20

Clive, thanks for another superb season of previews, reports and articles. I do not go to many games and all you write enriches my continued of the club, to which I am most grateful.

Having lost a talented manager, it will be a real shame if we let certain players go, notably Dunne but others too. Who knows what we start with next season? One thing that cannot continue is the Dubai phone in. Surely there must be someone that can be appointed in that role.

Anyway thanks again to you and your helpers. Have a well earned break!

QPR trounced in final home game as Burnley run riot - Report
at 19:16:18

A very accurate reflection of a poor result. Whilst Burnley were a decent team all round, the space afforded to them at times was awful. I appreciate our team was weakened but really. The inability to get up field till the second half was shocking to see.

If we are going to play out from the back, we need to be prepared for pressing and give options. It happened in the Swansea game and again it just became a case of how many seconds before we gave it back to them, probably from a hoof.

The only highlight of the game was the build up and finish by Colback. Outstanding save denied him.

Fully agree with you on the need for all players to make that trip to Sunderland!

So, who are we hanging onto next season? If I was one of the decent players or manager, would I stay? Shorter season but a long summer.

More injuries and home woes for QPR against form Swans – Report
at 12:31:18

Thanks Clive for a very fair report and couldn't argue with the result.

I totally agree with your comments on Smyth, why an earth are people turning on him?

Very frustrating watching the piss balling playing out from the back, which was sensibly closed down by Swansea every time! And if they are reliant on Nardi for the big boot, he needs to work on that too.

As for the Vigouroux and Darling scam injuries, I do question why one of our team was not on the case regarding the handling of the ball / goal kick. Just shows the concentration of the players. If they were focused, they would have been all over it.

Personally, I should have realised it would be a bad day, when I found the Crown & Sceptre closed for re-decorating before the game. Should have called it a day then!

Assuming Swansea hang on to their manager, I can see them being a top 6 team. Sadly, they just looked better all round.

Excellent - as always. Thanks

Still laughing about the King Arthur reference from your last piece!

Regarding Dembele on a winning side, I thought I saw him playing in the Luton away win?

Something about a Valentine’s Day massacre – Report
at 00:03:37

Lethargic or cautious start, I don't know but the first 15 minutes was pretty dire. However, the timing of the opener could not have been better. I cannot figure out how Frey manages to keep control of a ball that is behind him, it is a feature of his game! Once in front, I thought the result was not in doubt, though perhaps flattering.

Great report as always (especially liked the coat hanger reference), thanks.

Kolli crowns big week with perfect Plymouth winner – Report
at 12:18:19

Compared to the reverse fixture, Plymouth were much poorer and we were much better. That said, this was a very good performance. As noted, the inability to put away chances is frustrating. Even during our poor spell, the number of chances created quite often was high, just not converted.

One clear difference now is the movement when in possession, which makes for so many options and gives Chair more freedom too. Kolli continues to impress, just must not put pressure on him.

A lot of the team have really come on, it is not just confidence. Very satisfying and not obvious a few months back!

Cheers, Clive

Three and easy night – Report
at 15:07:16

Great entertainment. First half was particularly good for R's. Frey didn't think it was a goal either, not initially celebrating! However, the need to take chances really mattered and it could easily have been a draw.

My main concern, as you pointed out, is the "McGuinness, for the umpteenth time in the game" free header. One goal and a terrible miss. That needs to be sorted out, before other teams cotton onto it.

The other is the obsession with playing out (slowly) from a goal kick, especially in the second half, which often ended up with a punt, usually into touch. Nothing gained, apart from missed heart beats!

However, much of the style is great to watch. The team spirit is there too. Also, the new players are coming on well, as evidenced by Nardi not being the automatic MotM award. Great to see Clarke-Salter and Colback returning.

I thought the match officials did not do their job regarding Smyth, it was a head injury and was ignored by linesman and referee. The linesman must have seen the clash, regardless of intent.

Perhaps a cup run might be on this season!! Or will it be put down to protecting our Championship status! What a turnaround though.

Smyth’s smash and grab stuns City – Report
at 11:21:52

Whilst we conceded possession, the wings and played deep, I thought it was a very good defensive display. Agree that had any of their first half chances gone in etc.. it might have been different but they didn't and I thought the commitment was always there and they kept shape. Ours is a weak team, weakened further by injuries, and has to work hard for their points and I feel they did. Bad passing on occasion but keeping shape out of possession.

Varane's pass to Smyth was no accident and would have led to nothing if that goalkeeping brain fart had not happened but Smyth's ability to keep his balance and deliver was worth the rest of the dross!

The front runners of Kolli/Lloyd were excellent, given their hopeless task on their own.

It is a shame about the 'ageing banana' of Anderson, he looked well off the pace again. Cannot figure out what has happened here. Also, not convinced by Ashby.

These are vital points, whilst a weak team is at its weakest. I am hopeful that the team can open up a bit, once some of the players return from injury. It is great playing minutes for the new lads in the meantime.

However, it does look like we will know at fixture 45 again!

Great report, as always. Cheers

Field the world, lets them know it’s Rangers’ time – Report

Clive, excellent report as always and just so you know, I for one read all your previews, midweek or otherwise. So thanks for them and tonight's extra 2,751 words.

Important win last night. The season is playing out remarkably like a re-run of last season! So I guess we have to wait to game 45 for a breather.

Twice in a week – Report
at 16:10:57

Great report and a remarkable comeback. Felt Colback played a big role in holding it together when we were trailing. How Frey managed to hold off defenders whilst controlling the back behind him is quite something in his making of the equaliser, followed by a sublime volley. Entertaining stuff.

Sluggish start for Hatters on Championship return - Oppo profile
at 10:32:37

With the minimum number of days between these fixtures, I would expect 2 reserve teams out for this match! I had a lot of respect for Luton last season and I agree Lutonexiles comment on key injuries, as I think they would have just survived, which would have been a monumental achievement and an irritation to the Premier League.
