I have to correct that assertion as a matter of historical fact and a friend’s memory.
My best mate’s dad ran the Admiral Blake, late ‘60s into the ‘70s. Ron would never have stood for any of that sort of carry-on.

No, I didn’t ignore your links PS, only trying to square what are, or seem like, conflicting interpretations from usually reliable media sources; sources that continue to report on the likes of Wednesday and Blackburn keeping slots in their squad registration lists open for free agents that may still appear after submission deadline.
Nico’s posting of the FIFA regs on transfers, however, would seem to have definitively nailed that. |

The next key date is when squads have to be registered.
If a club leaves space in its registration, a free agent can be signed and can play for his new club, regardless of whether he became a free agent before or after the transfer window.
