 | News Comment | Southampton At Norwich City The Carabao Cup Verdict at 17:13:49
My last: The former: Stewart and Archer not The latter: Downs and Brereton Dias. Caveat (ooh, yes please): The shiny new players, shame but just as well we started getting used to playing with Fernandes and Dibling. Can't believe we haven't got another keeper in to actually contest a place with McCarthy and Bazunu. That's an area where there's plenty could've been tempted. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Norwich City The Carabao Cup Verdict at 16:46:21
Considering time on the pitch then:- Standout /not a foot wrong: Charles, Roeslev, Taylor, Matsuki. Nearly, so 'pickable': Quarshie, Fraser, Archer, Manning, Stewart. Room for improvement /aspire /promotion to above categories: McCarthy (how old are you, kick it out man!) Downes, Edwards, Sesay. Jury's out: Downs, Brereton Dias. Still wrote that script no doubt. On the latter two, I don't usually favour a double sub of forwards especially when the top two are doing alright -maybe one if tiring or injured, but I won't complain if they're both in the mix for Watford etc. |
 | News Comment | Portsmouth Fans Not Happy With Travel And Match Ticket Prices For Trip To Southampton at 11:56:23
Appears the club have been fostering the ongoing (good?) relations between these two clubs. I understood that most Stoke City fans paid £30 for tickets at St Marys, and that the two fan groups were agreed and trying to recommend adherence to this policy for both the derby games? This has nothing to do with the transport costs which are a separate issue and understandably unique. Although this has set a precedent and we haven't heard our clubs plan for this, although they don't seem slow to capitalise these days. I'm also curious as to why Pompey need a pick up point from Winchester? We'll await comments from the club with baited breath but I would be more interested in other fans thoughts on this too. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Technical Director Defends Jack Stephens Contract at 17:34:08
The question is not about Mr Nice Guy, but surely his value to the club, and for too long now JS has become a metaphor for failure and the polar positions in this argument. Even his diminishing number of 'defenders' are merely putting up a case for club captain but never team captain surely? There used to be a difference. All self respecting Saints fans want JS to play out of his skin, but most know this has only happened occasionally. That's a lot to change isn't it? Some of the most successful Saints teams of the past have had Captain material parachuted in over longstanding Saints players -Rodrigues and Ball for kick off and many more since. Experience should not be measured solely by failure and this is a team that needs to breathe again. I hope we are proved wrong but there are too many of us poised to say I told you so. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Put In BId For Feyenoord Keeper at 09:26:48
If he can stay fit long enough to dovetail in with McCarthy's next purple patch or to compete with Bazunu on his own return to fitness and consistency? A competent goalkeeper makes all the difference, but knowing Saints luck? Be nice then if we can isolate our problems down to the 'floating' or spare central defender issue and getting enough goals from the team -surely? |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Oxford United The Verdict at 12:55:06
This didn't even come close to the usual pre season friendly with a just adequate first team and a team of hopefuls pushing for a place. Hope it's early days, and the players that have been signed to play for us -rather than the sister clubs -come in and improve the team immeasurably. The fans do clearly want to see that happening before Newcastle and Forest. We attend these games to see the new additions and get some clarity. Early days? It already looks like we're going to be learning on the job again -which is a far from satisfactory plan. |
 | News Comment | New Reform MP Rupert Lowe Will Give His MP Salary To Charity at 16:50:20
Balanced and nuanced? -no. Don't want to see anything about politics on here Nick -and certainly not that fringe outfit with the unbalanced. The suggestion that Rupert Lowe enabled -even built singlehandedly -the St Mary's Stadium really sticks in my craw and demeans the efforts of so many other people in Saints history. If I do not hear another word about this colossal self aggrandising buffoon it will still be too much. For Nick to use this as a platform for him and his one track misfit party is a step too far, so no more please. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Sell Out Wembley Tickets In Just Two Days at 14:42:27
Just been in a 'virtual' queue again for the further 1100 tickets that they found(?). This just a further installment of the farcical fiasco. With no joy, so extra good luck to you all in that number. Leave your voices in that stadium to ensure ultimate success. |
 | News Comment | Saints Must Wear Third Kit At Wembley Due To Petty EFL Rule at 14:29:26
Farcical, like the virtual queues encountered online for tickets. Saints had very often worn red socks with the red and white stripes, so we should've defaulted to that a la Baggies. So, I echo most of the comments above, but would also quote Greavsie: "It's a funny old game Saint!" You're telling me. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Sell Out Wembley Tickets In Just Two Days at 09:18:32
As a bewildered technophone, I'm sure plenty of people with less ticket qualifications jumped me and mine in the queue. Bring back vouchers and physical queues along with the Red and White stripes of course. Good Luck to those (in that number) that do get there, you value those tickets, make sure you lose your voices, and ensure we win. |
 | News Comment | Leeds United Confirm Their Kit For Wembley Showdown With Southampton at 09:10:00
Should be Red and White Stripes all the way up Wembley Way. (Only get to say that every couple of years, nice ring to it, unlike JWW) Seriously, I will blame the stupid and unnecessary change if we don't. We always used to wear red socks with the red and white stripes anyway, we should not be conceding anything, particularly tradition heritage and consistency along with our united voices. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At West Bromwich Albion The Play Off Verdict at 08:44:17
We cannot allow them that many chances this time. So, a more positive outlook at home, with the right line up and less suicidal back foot gifts to the opposition, and the best team (clearly) will prevail. Total and absolute backing throughout the however many minutes that are necessary will then be duly rewarded. I agree with virtually every contribution above, and trust /hope this is not at odds with the manager and club. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Sell Out St Mary's For The West Brom 2nd Leg Play Off Semi Final at 08:32:33
Positive that it's sold out so quickly (other than the hospitality*). Suggest the club need to have some diplomatic discussions if they want those corporate hospitality seats sold. Otherwise, looks like the blatant profiteering may have discharged another bullet to the foot again. Hope this can be resolved, but mainly that Saints can get the result(s) with ALL fans on board*. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Bristol City The Verdict at 17:23:25
Our problems have always been rooted in defence, though you can't blame individuals. Teams that attack us -regardless of personnel -will cause us a problem, and this has been apparent in some of our narrow victories, draws and even some of those games we managed to make look one sided by numbers -the Thornhills for example. When we defend from the front, protecting a vulnerable defence, press or counter in numbers and at pace we can usually win. We must not go back into our shell, if we play, we're better. Simple, if we don't we won't go up automatically, and may struggle getting to -or out of- the playoffs. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Watford The FA Cup Replay Preview at 19:36:50
Intelligent comments on here -as per. Hate to say it, but looks to this fan that our club have disregarded or overlooked us yet again with a further roll of the dice in this competition. We have to hope that the players have learnt more than the management, or that we don't incur too many injuries as the later substitutions bust a gut getting us through. I do hope I've got this wrong. |
 | News Comment | Russell Martin Take A Bow at 13:34:28
I like your list of managers Nick, and would say that I would agree on the Puel comments too, and definitely add Dave Merrington and maybe Alan Ball and Chris Nicholl ahead of him. Russell Martin would do well to heed the comments of a thinking fanbase too. Merrington sneaks in your list for me for what he did individually for players too, and what this meant in the longer term for this club. Bally and Nicholl much the same, even though poor Chris was unaware at the time, he oversaw a slow dismantling of a great team and tradition, which has taken years in the rebuilding, with many an unnecessary bump in the road since. |
 | News Comment | Russell Martin Take A Bow at 13:16:11
Any team with big time aspirations -and why not us -would've needed a good and sustained run after that poor period. I do believe the team /squad and manager has improved through the season, and I do believe a better style has evolved. So many elements seem to be coming together. Credit for this progress is acknowledged, but full on plaudits only when they are due please -whatever your own agenda for the various shades of naysayers. This season's activity so far can only be likened to dragging your heels at the start of a marathon (even going off course?), and starting to speed up (nearing a sprint, even getting a 10k PB?) in the middle when most will know -I certainly do -that the toughest part of the race is still ahead of us. It is after all, more of a marathon than a sprint isn't it? |
