 | Forum Reply | Apparently, there was a "big" "Derby" today at 08:34 23 Mar 2025
There were indeed plenty of empty seats, although for context the attendance was still higher than Eastleigh's. The club have been hyping up the fixture for months on social media so I'm not sure how any Saints fans wouldn't have known about it. Given the publicity, I was surprised there weren't a few more people there, although Saints' current form (no wins in eight) and the general malaise towards the club in general, probably didn't help. I only go along to a couple of women's games a season and this was the first one since a few of our better players apprently left the club. The first 15 minutes or so were pretty dreadful (in my opinion of course), every pass went astray, the first touch was generally the last, and it looked as if all the forwards on both sides had been having shooting lessons from Kamaldeen. However, things did improve, and once you lower your expections a bit and accept the standard for what it is, I actually quite enjoyed it. It was end to end alright, although in fairness that was generally more to do with passes going astray in the final third than any particularly good pieces of play from either team. Saints do have a couple of decent players: Peploe in midfield stood out and the two central defenders looked quite assured, and the keeper made some important saves, especially a match-saving one right at the end. Pompey should probably have won the match, and had they had a decent striker they almost certainly would have. Goalscorers are obviously at a premium at this level. A couple of things stood out. In complete contrast to the Wolves game last week there was none of the cheating/time wasting b*llocks. They get fouled, they get up and they get on with it, and everyone seems to respect the referee's decisions. I wish this was the case with the mens' game. Secondly, and this may shock and disappoint a few people on here, but there were Pompey fans drinking and mixing with Saints fans in the bar before the game, hardly any police or stewards around. The atmosphere wasn't aggressive at all. Contrast this to what will inevitably happen next season (granted, I fully understand that many reading this will actually be looking forward to this aspect of the derby - see Cocklebreath's post above!!). So, all in all I quite enjoyed the match, and for the first time this year I actually came away from St Mary's not moaning about seeing yet another Saints defeat. [Post edited 23 Mar 8:46]

If it's to help avoid cramp it didn't work for Wolves. So many of them were hitting the deck on Saturday I thought there was a sniper in the stadium. Strangely though, they only get cramp when they're winning. |

I see they're taking no chances with the leaky roofs - they're putting a big tarpaulin over the actual stadium roof. It's a bizarre design, more Saudi Arabia than Salford. And God knows how far from the pitch the back rows will be. It's bad enough at Wembley and that has 10,000 less seats than the new OT will have. |

What a strange response. Sometimes you come across as being one of the more literate Pompey fans (it's a fairly low bar, I know), but that response was just sh*t. Try harder next time mush. |

Nah, just bigger than you lot for the vast majority of my life. Although to be fair, that's not been difficult. |

Not surprised. It was a big day for Pompey, getting to play a big club after all those years of playing the likes of Crawley Town and Morecambe. And it was on telly too. Bless their little red cotton socks. |

Tall Paul can't go on the Eastleigh Miniature Railway as he can't fit through the tunnel. |

I agree, it was sheer madness for the manager to change a midfield that's been so incredibly successful all campaign. Our season could take a dramatic downturn from here. |

Shame Lallana wasn't given the job until the end of the season. What did we have to lose? Who knows, he might have turned out to be an excellent manager (young coaches seem to be the fashion nowadays). After all, he's played under some outstanding managers and Brendan Rogers. |

Quite right, freedom of speech and all that. But why does my comment not help? If he's genuinely pissed off to the point that he'd like to see the club dissolved (which some may consider a somewhat selfish attitude) it seems like a reasonable suggestion for him to form his own club. FCUM appear to have done ok. |

Exactly. Less than a year ago we were having an amazing day out at Wembley. Things change very quickly in football... for better and for worse. Real fans stick with their club through thick and thin. That said, I don't think there's anything to stop St Mark from going off and forming a new rebel club if he's that disillusioned. I'm sure there's plenty of wrist slashers on here who would help him. Given all of the above, and without the safety net of VAR, it probably wasn't the brightest idea for Leicester to collectively step out and try to play United offside. |

It's crazy how people seem to be totally oblivious to this factor. Some are frothing at the mouth over our failure to spend tens of millions on players who will make absolutely zero difference to our league position come the end of the season. It's the same with the folk who want to get rid of SR. I'd love to see their list of alternatives. Or maybe they want 10 point penalties, administration and potential liquidation? |
 | Forum Reply | Dibbling on his way to Spurs ? at 10:59 29 Jan 2025
Dibbling is the closest we've come to another young Le Tiss. Without having too much pace he still manages to somehow wriggle out of tight situations and glide past defenders like they're not there, just like Matty did in his early days. He also has an uncanny eye for goal, and in a much better team than ours he would be scoring loads of goals. In an absolute sh*tshow of a season, him and Fernandes have often been the only players worth watching. Mind you, he seems a bit grumpy at times, so whether he goes on to become a huge superstar probably depends on his attitude (and possibly his agent!). |
 | Forum Reply | What has happened to the fans? at 11:17 7 Jan 2025
Hopefully most fans are realists. This season was always going to be tough, although admittedly no-one could have predicted quite how tough. Anyway, storming the gates of St Mary's is hardly going to achieve anything, unless people want Sport Republic to jack it in and leave us on the verge of bankruptcy again. Two years ago at this same time people were asking the same questions and we actually had a decent season the following year, culminating in one of the best days of our lives at Wembley. Things change very quickly in football. |
